You would think an (almost) 50 YO would have different night

Odd recurring dream theme of for a 48 YO to have. Especially, since I test well(except in math) and enjoyed writing term papers in College V2.
It is set in school-some sort of combination of high school and college.
1) There is some sort of science class that I have been skipping, but there is a test coming up.
2) There is a math quiz or test and I have no idea how to do the problems.
3) It is Friday and a huge research paper is due on Monday and I haven't started.

I still have that or a similar dream sometimes. Typically is is about a class I completely forgot I was taking until it is test time; seems I went to the class the first week of school and for some reason just forgot about it until now and we are into the 10th or 11th week, I suddenly remember about the class or find my class schedule and see the class and then remember. My fear is how do I explain to the professor that I just simply forgot I was taking the class. "Can I make up the missed work?" I'm glad they are just dreams.

Mine is slightly different, and fortunately very infrequent.
I'll dream that I suddenly realize that I'm one class short of graduating (this is always for the Master's degree), and try to figure out how to pull it off. Then I wake up and realize I got the degree almost 30 years ago.

I've had that "I don't remember signing up for this class" dream. Fortunately, very infrequently. Its so not-me; I'm fairly obsessive when it comes to stuff like going to class. And I believe in the near future we will have brain surgeons who got their degrees over the internet. With someone else taking the classes for them. But that's another topic.

That basically happened to me in real life. Last quarter of college V1 in Spring 1989. I had a stats class that I went to the first day and maybe not very many other (like maybe none)-real smart considering I needed it to graduate. Anyway, some time during the week before finals, I remembered that the teacher said the final would be the week before Finals Week. I remembered this the night before the final.
I called a friend who was in the class-got his notes and stuff and I got a "B". That is my college miracle.

Sounds like a "sneaky" prof I had in undergrad - Econ 102, to be precise.
He announced at the start of the semester that he didn't take attendance, had two midterms and one final. The only requirement was that you took the final. If you took all exams, the midterms were 25% each and the final 50%; if you missed a midterm, it was 25%/75% (no makeups); if you just took the final, it was 100%.
And I, being naturally paranoid, figured it was a trap.
I took the two midterms, got 100% on both. Took the final, and barely avoided getting a B, it was that kind of tough. And I'm sure it was no accident he planned it that way.

I think that's a typical dream for someone who fits your description.
I have a similar dream all the time- you dreams incorporate things you've experienced, so it makes sense these "I forgot I have to do something" dreams would incorporate those elements.

Well, I AM 50 and have had the "test for a class I've been skipping all year/forgot I was taking" dream several times in recent years. Probably has some deep meaning for feeling prepared or feeling like you're overlooking something.

Makes sense. From 1989 to 2003, my main job was making sure the pigs got fed. The other recurring dream is obviously based on that. I have countless dreams that I have forgotten to feed the pigs.

I've noticed lately, as I've gotten older, that those dreams involving forgetting to attend class or being on a precipice or near water, resolve themselves with me getting out, around or through the obstacles. It's weird.

My favorite dream interpretation model says that the people in our dreams represent aspects of ourselves - so the teacher/professor/tutor represents something about ourselves that is wanting to be expressed.
Also, we are still just solving problems all the freaking time while we sleep, only we translate them into other venues sometimes.

Not weird. I believe it's called lucid dreaming, where the dreamer actually controls the dream. It's a technique that I've somehow developed over the years, which has made for some interesting dreams (no hallucinogens involved!) or, more usually as you've said, resolves the dream problem in my favor.
Of course, sometimes it doesn't resolve itself, and I end up waking up Mrs. Spiff with a hellacious yell in my sleep!

Whereas my such dreams end with me waking up in a probably-diabetes-related panic attack (the body responds to sugar that has fallen too *low* with stress hormones that trigger the body releasing hormones to put sugar back up, but also give feeling of, well, stress). I usually think, for a while, that the dream events are really going on.
