WWTBAM Bored

Yesterday morning I came out of my house to get into my car to go to work when I realized that someone had gone into the car and rummaged through the glove compartments and center console. We don't normally lock our car doors, so at least whoever it was didn't have to break a window to get in. I don't know what he or she was seeking but as far as we can tell, nothing was taken. Needless to say, we'll be locking the car doors from now on.

The most valuable thing anyone would get out of my car is a shitload of slightly dusty napkins and a bunch of salt and pepper packets. Oh, and a bunch of old Pepsi bottlecaps if they're into that....

Whether you lost anything valuable or not, it still sucks to know that someone has violated your space and might try to do so again. I used to have a problem with burglars at my bar and it almost ran me crazy trying to stop or catch them.

But did you lock the doors?

This is a big problem here. Kids, illegals, and others roam neighborhoods at night checking car doors to see if they are unlocked. If they are, they rummage, many times finding valuable things such as purses, phones, keys, and other items. It is a crime of opportunity and unfortunately a lot of folks allow the opportunities to pay off thus breeding more of the opportunity hunting.

I've seen videos of folks going from driveway to driveway checking cars and even with a 'getaway car' slowly following.

After paying to have my side window replaced in my van, if I have to leave it in the driveway (rather than the garage) for any reason overnight, I leave it unlocked, and even with the windows down a bit. I just don't leave anything valuable in it, including the registration/proof of insurance folder. Much cheaper than replacing another window.
