I was going to be even more shocked if it had been a public school. I have to get signatures from three different administrators and signed permission forms (signed by a parent/guardian and all affected teachers) from each student before I can even call a bus company. I have to explain the educational objectives, justify the educational value, and if the destination is not on a list of pre-approved spots, get it approved by the School Board in a public meeting. I send a list of students attending to my fellow teachers, remind the students that any homework they have in other classes is due before we leave, not after, and then start calling potential chaperones so we have a 10:1 student to adult ratio.

There's more to it than that, but you can see how such a field trip would never make it at my school, even if I thought it was a great idea. I would venture to say it is the same at the vast majority of public schools, although I can still be shocked, especially by "zero-tolerance" stories.
