The Longest Day

If today seems like it's going kind of slow, you're not imagining. June 30 will be the longest day of the year, because scientists are adding one second to it. The "leap second," which occurs periodically, is needed to keep atomic clocks closer in synch with the earth's rotation, which continues to slow down. The leap second will occur just before 8:00 this evening (which is midnight on the Universal Time Clock). Instead of going from 7:59:59 to 8:00:00, official clocks will go to 7:59:60 instead.

This one-second difference will be noticed, and not just by those anxious to see "Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader." The last leap second, added in 2012, caused glitches in computer systems, so there's no way of knowing if that will happen again, especially since world financial markets, which now feature computerized trading, will be open at the time.
