Tragic news

Was just told that the boyfriend of one of my daughter's best friends committed suicide last night. He is also a neighbor (his family lives two houses down from the house directly across the street from us) and one of the most polite and respectful young men I've ever met.
RIP Dalton Adams (19 or 20)
We've no idea what was going on in his life that he felt it wasn't worth living.

So sorry for the sadness and turmoil you, your daughter, her friends, and your neighborhood are enduring. My brother committed suicide a few years ago. All that remains is sadness and questions.
Love,

BiT, I'm so sorry for the loss of your daughter's friend.
Our community recently had a middle-schooler commit suicide, and even those of us with a very slight connection to this boy, or none at all, were deeply saddened. Nothing has been reported about what might have been going on in the young man's life to make him take this final step. The school district provided counselors, hoping to intervene before there were copycats, and that seems to have worked.
It could have been anything -- maybe he was battling depression and just couldn't fight it anymore. It's so hard to make sense of something like this. May he rest in peace . . .

Sorry to hear this.
We went through this pain five years ago when an acquaintance of my daughter's did the same thing. His parents suspected bullying, but there was never any evidence that was happening...my daughter, who was very clued in to what was happening among the kids at school, never saw anything that indicated this young man was being bullied.
It's the not knowing that ripped the mother and dad apart...they felt like such failures because they didn't know anything was wrong.
Best thing you can do, BiT, is just be there as a listening ear for your neighbors should they ask for it.

It's not always something "going on" in the lives of these individuals. Depression is a horrible, horrible disease. The severe type that leads to suicide is what I'd term a silent killer. I used to be one of those individuals who thought suicide was a cowardly way out of one's problems; a permanent solution to temporary problems. Then I went through a bout of depression. It's not, I think, even about 'ending' things. I think it's just, you get so very, very tired, and you want so very badly for everything to just go away for a while. You are simply not capable of thinking through things in a rational manner, although your thoughts feel perfectly rational in the moment. A friend's husband recently committed suicide by hanging. She told me he'd been depressed, but she didn't realize how badly, just that he kept saying how tired he was. Ten years ago, I would have thought, what a selfish a@@hole. This time, I could only nod my head and say, I get it.

I am so sorry BiT. And for those of us who have endured this sort of tragedy and witnessed or experienced depression.

The whys may never be answered. Lots of good advice here. Those left behind have to deal with loss, guilt and perhaps their own depression. My heart goes out to his family and your community.
