Hope Solo is a bad, bad person

From an ESPN Outside The Lines report:
KIRKLAND, Wash. -- It was early in the morning on June 21, 2014, and Hope Solo had just been arrested on two counts of domestic violence. The police were trying to book her into jail, but Solo was so combative that she had to be forced to the ground, prompting her to yell at one officer, "You're such a b----. You're scared of me because you know that if the handcuffs were off, I'd kick your ass."

Solo, perhaps the best women's soccer goalie in the world, had repeatedly hurled insults at the officers processing her arrest, suggesting that two jailers were having sex and calling another officer a "14-year-old boy." When asked to remove a necklace, an apparently drunk Solo told the officer that the piece of jewelry was worth more than he made in a year.
The night escalated to violence shortly before 1 a.m., as Solo and the teenager exchanged a series of insults. The teenager has performed in local theater for years, and at one point he suggested to Solo that being a good actor required "having an athletic state of mind," according to a police report. Solo responded that he was too "fat, unathletic and crazy" ever to be an athlete, the teenager and Obert told police. He told Solo she needed to "get her c--- face out of the house," and then walked away. Obert also suggested Solo should leave at that point.

Instead, Solo followed him into the home's converted garage, where the teenager then yelled for his mother, prompting Solo to call him a "pussy" and a "mama's boy," he said to police and in his deposition, which is also under seal but was obtained by Outside the Lines. He then told Solo, "You'll never know what it's like to be a mother, because even if you did have children, they would have the most unhappy childhoods because you have no compassion." He told police Solo lunged at him to "take a swing," hitting him lightly in the face. He said she charged and struck him multiple times. Obert, who had come into the room, said in her deposition and in an interview with Outside the Lines that her son briefly subdued Solo and she seemed to calm down. Obert told the teenager to let his aunt up off the ground. "She's done," Obert recalled telling her son, according to her deposition. He didn't believe his mom, but she said, "No, she's done. You can let go, she's done."

But when Obert's son let Solo go, he told police she "immediately grabbed his hair, pulled his head down and started punching him in the face repeatedly." Later, in the deposition, he said Solo "jumped on top of me and started bashing my head into the cement" inside the garage.

"She grabbed him by the head and she kept slamming him into the cement over and over again," Obert told Outside the Lines. "So I came from behind her, and I pulled her over and, you know, to get her off my son. And then, once she got off, she started punching me in the face over and over again."

Sounds like she needs to be refrozen in that carbonite for a few years...

This may well be true and I'm fairly confident she's not someone I'd ever care to invite to my house for dinner. However, it's important to bear in mind that the story at this point is necessarily one-sided. She's facing criminal charges. If I were her lawyer, there's no way I'd let her respond to this story until after those charges are resolved. --Bob

If this were a male athlete in the same predicament, he would already be off the team. But she's one of the best goalies in the world and the women's team has no shot without her.

According to her coach, they've "moved on."

The US women's soccer team lost to Sweden in a shoot out and Hope calls them "a bunch of cowards."
"We played a creative game. We had many opportunities on goal. We showed a lot of heart. We came back from a goal down. I’m very proud of this team."

“We played a bunch of cowards. The best team did not win today. I strongly, firmly believe that.”

"Sweden dropped back. They didn't want to open play. They didn’t want to pass the ball around. They didn’t want to play great soccer, entertaining soccer. It was a combative game. A physical game. Exactly what they wanted. Exactly what their game plan was. We had that style of play when Pia was our coach. I think it was very cowardly. But they won, they’re moving on. And we’re going home,"

She remains a despicable human (and a bad sport). No medal for her.

That's after Hope tweeted this photo of herself prepared for Zika:

If she ever wants to be a pro soccer player overseas, the number of countries that will accept her is dwindling.

Tie-in to another topic: Elizabeth Warren channeled her inner Hope Solo with this tweet:

Sounds like she's baiting Trump, but he hasn't responded yet.

One thing that everyone forgets (and I don't recall being mentioned on TV) is that the Swedish head coach was previously the US women's team's head coach from 2008 to 2012. That would mean she was familiar with many of the players and what would work against them. There also might be some bad blood between the US players and the Swedish coach.

That being said, Hope Solo is our best goalkeeper. But she's also a poor sport, and is an ass.

Hope Solo is why they coined the phrase "ugly American."

Does the USWNT have any games (other than "friendlies") or major tournaments in the next six months? World Cup qualifying probably doesn't start until next year, since the finals aren't until 2019.

Former USWNT goalkeeper Hope Solo arrested on DWI, child abuse charges

Former U.S. women's national team star goalkeeper Hope Solo was arrested after she was found passed out behind the wheel of a vehicle in North Carolina with her 2-year-old twins inside, police said.

A police report said Solo was arrested on Thursday in a shopping center parking lot in Winston-Salem and charged with driving while impaired, resisting a public officer and misdemeanor child abuse. She has been released from jail and has a court date of June 28, the report indicated.

According to an arrest warrant, a passerby noticed Solo passed out behind the steering wheel for more than an hour with the vehicle's engine running and the two children in the backseat. A responding officer could smell alcohol, and the warrant said that Solo refused a field sobriety test and that her blood was drawn instead.

I don't feel sorry for elite athletes who fuck up later.

However.

Some of them just never seem to figure out how to be normal people, after having reached heights the rest of us will never achieve.

Maybe head injuries/concussions? Less likely for her than some, but maybe. Again, NOT an excuse but a possible explanation. Tons of football players are useless after their playing careers, for much of anything except selling cars.

I'd guess a goalie would have taken more shots to the head than your average player, especially before she got good at it.

I'm not sure the DWI charge will stick. It sounds like she was neither driving nor on a public road. Perhaps the law is drafted broadly enough to include someone who is behind the wheel of a car while its engine is running, even if the car is standing still on private property. --Bob

You clearly have never practiced criminal law, particularly DUI defense.

Car does not even need to be running in many states. Key in ignition can be sufficient, or keys within reach.

I did see that CA does require volitional movement of vehicle, not just physical control. Of course, she would have driven to the shopping center, so if this happened in your state, they would be considering where she was drinking, ie whether she had driven with the required BAC.

Yeah, in North Carolina, if you are behind the wheel you count as a driver, even on private property. At least that's how I learned it, a billion years ago, when we actually had Driver's Ed.
