A modern bio of Frederick Russell Burnham by Steven Kemper will be released January 25th, 2016.

Somewhat in the same vein as Burnham is Lee Christmas. I learned of him while reading a book about the Banana industry about 1900( or whatever)

I first found out about Burnham about 6 years ago and one of the things I like about him is how ubiquitous he is once you know his name and story. I find references to him in a lot of places that would have went over my head before.

He seemed to be everywhere in the relevant span of his life. Interactions with Roosevelt and a lot of of other TPTB.

1) Range and Apache wars in the Southwest.

2) Mineral finding and exploration throughout his life in both Africa and the US.

3) Followed Rhodes's call to Africa-was involved in the intital settlement of Rhodesia

4) Fought in both Matabele Wars-served there with Baden-Powell and was instrumental in founding the Boy Scouts and providing a model for Baden-Powell. Survived the famous "Shangani" patrol, which is obviously less well-known than it used to be.

5) Was in the Klondike-missed the Spanish-American War while there-

6) Directly requested by Lord Roberts(while in the Klondike) to be his chief scout in the Boer War. Directly interacted hostilely with Danny Theron (Prob the most famous Boer in the war).

7) IIRC-was on same ship with Churchill while leaving Africa.

Involved in numerous Geological and settlement projects in Mexico and throughout the southwest.



He is almost a true-life Flashman. As I said earlier-He was everywhere.

His first book "Scouting on Two Continents" did a pretty good job on his scouting and war stuff-I am almost looking more forward to Kemper filling in the mineral and settlement stuff.

Frederick Selous was a contemporary also with an interesting and diverse life but Burnham outdid I think, but is less well-known than Selous.

Don't know much about Christmas, but I find references to him intriguing and may read more about him.

I am hoping the new book answer two questions. !. Did FRB ever eat kale . 2. Was FRB afraid of water pistols.

I know I posted this when it came out, "American Hippopotamous" a short magazine type article on Amazon that described a scheme of TR's and others including Burnham to bring Hippos to Louisiana swamps. It is just such a neat flavor of times gone by.
