Tragic and extremely rare event for the northeast corridor, cause still undetermined but not a grade crossing as there are none in the area:

PORT RICHMOND (WPVI) --
At least five people are dead after an Amtrak train derailed in the Port Richmond section of Philadelphia.

"It is an absolute disastrous mess. Never seen anything like this in my life," Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter said during a press conference late Tuesday night along with Fire Commissioner Derrick Sawyer and Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey.

My BFF regularly travels to Iowa via Amtrak and recently went to San Francisco the same way. I love that she does this because it always feels so safe. I'll be looking forward to learning about whatever caused the derailment.

The "black box" recorded that the train was going over 100 MPH, over twice the speed limit.

50 is the speed at which the curve is rated, not the general speed limit.

I believe the guy when he says he doesn't remember the train going that fast. I think he was asleep.

He couldn't have been asleep because he was on the phone with the SEPTA engineer shortly before the crash. Other crew members heard them and told the NTSB.

That's what he was on the phone with the SEPTA engineer. Windows shattered by projectiles.

I am not sure if "they're trying to blame someone throwing rocks" or if there is more to it. That's why the FBI is investigating.

So he was on the phone so didn't notice he was going faster than the 70 MPH speed limit and accelerating going into a 50 MPH curve? I don't buy that.

I said projectiles was the subject of his conversation with the SEPTA engineer.

AT NO TIME did I say he was on the phone so he didn't notice he was going faster than the 70 MPH speed limit and accelerating going into a 50 MPH curve.

His phone was off and stored. That's been widely reported here.

I don't care what you buy or don't. BECAUSE I DIDN"T SAY IT he was on the phone at the time of the crash.

Yesterday's Los Angeles Times reported that the engineer has a history as an advocate of rail safety. I have no idea what actually happened but my guess is that for some reason it wasn't his fault. --Bob
