In Australia and New Zealand, it's now 25 April, ANZAC Day, commemorating the 100th anniversary of the start of the Battle of Gallipoli, when Australian, New Zealand, British and Canadian forces attacked the Turkish empire in World War I. The Turks eventually won the battle, but lost the war and their empire.

Also this month, Armenians and their friends around the world remember Medz Yeghern, the genocide that killed a million Armenians and other Christian minorities in Turkey.

Regarding the Armenians, I just finished Black Dog of Fate by Peter Balakian for my book club. It's an amazing personal narrative. It was like reading Vine Deloria Jr.'s books about the Native American experience here in the States.
