This may be the most on-topic post here in several years. Interesting behind the scenes network and studio discussions about the future of WWTBAM, thanks to the Sony hack.

Wow!
I wouldn't hold out great hope for them bringing it back after the 3 year wait at all, much less in classic format. They never discuss classic selection method, sadly.

The Super Mix, or shuffle format, that ABC currently airs is most likely due to the lawsuit that ABC and Buena Vista lost in regards to the production of the syndicated American version of the show. After that lawsuit, the Shuffle format was created, and it seems to be that ABC owns the format changes they brought on the show:
So that's what they call the randomized questions and question values? And ABC owns that? And all of the news lifelines, too? Gosh, they're making me root for ABC to cancel the show so that Sony brings back the classic game after three years (or one, if they negotiated the holdback down.

Hi all. Long time lurker, first time poster.
I've been following this since BuzzerBlog posted that article, and we'd been discussing it at another board. I'm curious to know what more people think. What do you think the likelihood is that Sony would try to revive the series in either a) the classic format, or b) a new format, should ABC decide to cancel? Any speculation?

It probably depends on who's in charge at Sony when and if that ever happens. The current regime seems to think the original WWTBAM format still has value, but whenever new executives take over, they tend to distance themselves from any pet projects of the old guard. In any case, if they think they can make money from it, it probably still has a future. But even if the new host fails and the syndicated show is cancelled after one more season, it may be at least four years from now before Sony is back in control of the property.
