Both films did not win Best Picture in 1962. The Longest Day had some of it's makers receive awards but it was not an Oscar-winning film.
That realization occurred to me yesterday. There are several women with speaking roles - the resistance fighter you mentioned, Erwin Rommel's wife (saying something about the shoes her husband brought her from Paris for her birthday), a French woman who reacts to her husband's rejoicing over the invasion, and a French woman who reports a paratrooper landing in her yard.
