Lyrics Quiz: Monday Mystery

Having volunteered myself for the position, I will run lyrics quizzes on weekdays through the end of the month. You will have until the next lyrics quiz is posted to post your answers. (And if somebody could please tell me how to make my quizzes "sticky" so they stay at the top, I'd appreciate it.) I have a wide range of tastes, mostly pop and rock from the late 60s to the present, but I may throw in an odd song from time to time. However, there are certain artists I detest, and if you ever identify a song by Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, or Lionel Richie (solo), then you've obviously done something wrong.

The initial quiz for this month is below. The songs are in no particular order. 10 points for correct artist, 10 points for correct song, 10 points for bonus questions, and partial points when I feel like it. There is a mystery theme that binds them all together. And, if you've read this far, I've already given you a big hint as to what it is.

1. Pick up the phone, leave her alone
It's time you made a stand
For a fee, I'm happy to be
Your back door man

2. Something is wrong as I hold you near
Somebody else holds your heart, yeah
You look at me with your eyes in tears
And then its raining, feels like its raining

3. Let's play Twister, let's play Risk
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
See you in heaven if you make the list
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

4. There's a hole in my head where the rain comes in
You took my body and played to win
Ha ha, woman, it's a crying shame
But you ain't got no one else to blame

5. I told him I'm in no hurry
But if I broke her heart, wont you tell her I'm sorry
And for once in my life I'm alone
And I've got to let her know just in time before I go

6. A bullet had found him
His blood ran as he cried
No money could save him
So he laid down and he died

7. I've played all my cards
And thats what you've done too
Nothing more to say
No more ace to play

8. I touch you once, I touch you twice
I won't let go at any price
I need you now like I needed you then
You always said we'd still be friends someday

9. Shed a tear 'cause I'm missin' you
I'm still alright to smile
Girl, I think about you every day now

10. Look at the faces
Listen to the bells
It's hard to believe we need a place called hell

Bonus: Identify the mystery theme.

Double Bonus: Two artists in this quiz, #5 and #10, don't quite fit the theme. Explain why. (10 points for each)

Final Bonus: Who is song #3 about?

Well, I'll agree with you on most of that (except for Lionel), though I have used plenty of songs I have detested before in my LS games....

BTW, only a moderator can make a post sticky, so you'll just have to wait until one of us shows up. I'm here almost every morning, so it shouldn't ever take too long for me to see it....

For a fee, I'm happy to be
Your back door man
TNT - AC/DC

2. Something is wrong as I hold you near
Somebody else holds your heart, yeah
You look at me with your eyes in tears
And then its raining, feels like its raining

3. Let's play Twister, let's play Risk
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
See you in heaven if you make the list
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Man in the Moon - REM

4. There's a hole in my head where the rain comes in
You took my body and played to win
Ha ha, woman, it's a crying shame
But you ain't got no one else to blame
Evil Woman - Electric Light Orchestra

5. I told him I'm in no hurry
But if I broke her heart, wont you tell her I'm sorry
And for once in my life I'm alone
And I've got to let her know just in time before I go

6. A bullet had found him
His blood ran as he cried
No money could save him
So he laid down and he died
What a Lucky Man He Was - Emerson Lake and Palmer (Always have to fight off my subconscious wanting to say Palmeiro instead of Palmer after listening to too much Chris Berman in the 90's)....

7. I've played all my cards
And thats what you've done too
Nothing more to say
No more ace to play

8. I touch you once, I touch you twice
I won't let go at any price
I need you now like I needed you then
You always said we'd still be friends someday
If You Leave - Orchestral Manoevers in the Dark

9. Shed a tear 'cause I'm missin' you
I'm still alright to smile
Girl, I think about you every day now

10. Look at the faces
Listen to the bells
It's hard to believe we need a place called hell
Devil Inside - INXS

Bonus: Identify the mystery theme. - A theme I used the other way around in December 2004 (On the titles instead of the artists), but the groups' names are all known by just letters... which of course works for ELO, ELP and OMD. I'll bet ABBA and maybe GTR are in here too. I can't believe I'd miss a CCR lyric, so they must no be among the ones I've missed....

Double Bonus: Two artists in this quiz, #5 and #10, don't quite fit the theme. Explain why. (10 points for each) - Their letters don't stand for anything, i.e., they're not acronyms. At least, that's what I'd guess....

Final Bonus: Who is song #3 about? - Andy Kauffman

Somebody else holds your heart, yeah
You look at me with your eyes in tears

3. Let's play Twister, let's play Risk

See you in heaven if you make the list
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

Man On the Moon, REM (With the AC/DC, I also got Accelerate, and all I can say is [Randy Jackson] REM is BACK, Dawg! Yeah! [/RJ] I played it at least 4 times on the headphones, then just Horse to Water at least a dozen times, then cranked it up on the regular player while I was cooking dinner. Then I listened to Automatic for the People twice last night. So I'm deaf.)

4. There's a hole in my head where the rain comes in
You took my body and played to win
Ha ha, woman, it's a crying shame

Evil Woman, ELO

8. I touch you once, I touch you twice
I won't let go at any price
I need you now like I needed you then
You always said we'd still be friends someday

Gah. 80's. Stuck in my brain and I can sing it but I can't tell you the title or artist!

9. Shed a tear 'cause I'm missin' you
I'm still alright to smile
Girl, I think about you every day now

Patience, GNR

10. Look at the faces
Listen to the bells
It's hard to believe we need a place called hell

Devil Inside, INXS

Bonus: Identify the mystery theme.

The artists are commonly called by initials or are named with initials.

Double Bonus: Two artists in this quiz, #5 and #10, don't quite fit the theme. Explain why. (10 points for each)

I don't have #5, but #10 doesn't stand for anything? Just sounds like a word rather than actual initials of words?

Final Bonus: Who is song #3 about?

Andy Kaufmann. I love REM, but I don't get the fascination for Latka. Alas.

Double Bonus: Two artists in this quiz, #5 and #10, don't quite fit the theme. Explain why. (10 points for each)
#5 doesn't quite fit because my ? isn't an acronym
#10 doesn't quite fit because it's more phoneticizing "In Excess" than actually standing for something in the traditional way an acronym does

I coulda got Lucky Man too if my brain were working, but the other choices I don't know.

I have no idea who #5 is, but #10 uses two letters pronounced together (IN-xs) when pronounced.

Final Bonus: Who is song #3 about?

The late, semi-great Andy Kaufman (in a wrestling match, yeah yeah yeah yeah....).

I had skipped Around the Sun because the previous three album had gone like: Purchase Album, Listen to it Once or Perhaps Twice, Put on Shelf, Forget. So I was buying the AC/DC, and I needed a couple more bucks to get free shipping, so I preordered Accelerate since it was 10 bucks.

It's not so much a great album in the album-y sense, but a great collection of songs. One has a feel like So. Central Rain from Reckoning, one reminded Steve of Try Not to Breathe from Automatic for the People, one would fit on Out of Time, and the last two would be on Monster, so it doesn't really have a sound of its own. But I've played it through at least 7 times in its entirety, and the only song I would consider skipping was Sing For the Submarine, but I still haven't skipped it. And Horse to Water is just 2:15 of full-tilt fun. I listen to Automatic, then on the next run-through I'll skip everything but Try Not to Breathe, my favorite REM of all time Find the River, and the timeless and fun Ignoreland.

Obviously, I don't need And I Feel Fine because I've had all their IRS stuff since the days of cassette tapes and now replaced with CDs, but I went and ordered Around the Sun even though it's supposed to be the worst ever. That is how much I enjoyed Accelerate. And now you know not to get me started on REM. Boy, Howdy!

Double Bonus: Two artists in this quiz, #5 and #10, don't quite fit the theme. Explain why. (10 points for each)
For the two of you on the planet who might not know, the name of the Bee Gees derived from "Brothers Gibb", so they made a phonetical name out of the initials. Shortly before they became famous, the Farriss Brothers changed their band name to INXS, which (from everything I've ever seen) didn't really stand for anything or than "in excess".

Final Bonus: Who is song #3 about?
Andy Kaufman.
