Unbelievable.

News reports now say the pilot left the cockpit to use the lavatory or something and was locked out by the co-pilot who would not let him back in. The cockpit voice recorder recorded the captain pounding on the door trying to get in with the co-pilot calmly breathing but not responding. At the end passengers could be heard screaming. Terrible

The only thing now to determine is "Why?".

This is bizarre.

Yesterday on CNN they were talking about various theories as to why the plane went down and this was not one of them. They were talking mainly about cabin depressurization.

Why would you deliberately crash a plane into a mountain?

For the same reason some deranged people shoot up some public place before ending their own life. If you're gonna go out, why not go out with a bang and take everyone you can with you?

I'm honestly surprised a pilot intentionally crashing a plane hasn't happened more often. That may be a dark observation, but I'm a dark realist...

I'm far from an expert, but I have to believe that if the co-pilot was unconscious that the plane would have maintained a steady altitude and course rather than the controlled and steady decent. I also think (but do not know for sure) that the pilot would have a way (secret key) to gain access in the event of an accidental lockout. It sounds as though the door was 'blocked' from the inside to prevent such emergency access.

He also had to manually override the keypad code that would have let the pilot back in the cockpit.

So obviously, this is disturbing. Some random thoughts:

Is there any comfort in knowing that it wasn't caused by a heretofore unknown mechanical issue?
This migrates the headaches from one set of attorneys (Airbus) to another (Lufthansa) though I'm sure some passenger attorneys will claim that Airbus is also to blame for designing the particular security system.

On U.S. aircraft post-9/11, there always have to be two people in the cockpit. Pilot steps out, flight attendant steps in. Certainly not a foolproof procedure. This pilot outside the cockpit has a key code to re-enter the cockpit but that can be overridden by someone remaining in the cockpit. Whether a second person (flight attendant) would really be able to assist in the event of deliberate sabotage is questionable.

How do you design a system that always keeps the bad guys out and always lets the good guys in? Do we implement procedures that prohibit flight deck crew from leaving? (e.g., install waste removal systems). That seems unlikely. There was an incident on Silk Air in the 1990s where the co-pilot simply killed the pilot. Doors didn't matter.

Does the issue of arming pilots get revisited now?

Give me a break. Even your link has a story that has "Neither of the plane’s two pilots have been named," but they have been. That page even has a link to the article. Things get confused on breaking stories.

I watched the video you linked to. Did you? The video stated that one of the black boxes had been found but it was not known whether it was the cockpit voice recorder or the flight data recorder. And that was two days ago. We now know it was the cockpit voice recorder. My original comment was about what the networks are saying today. It's funny how people who insist that facts matter don't seem to mind when their own facts are clearly wrong.
