Today's Really, Really Bad Remake Idea

The new Magnificent Seven.

On the plus side, it's directed by Antoine Fuqua, who knows how to handle action movies and it stars Denzel Washington, who is as good a choice as any in the Yul Brynner role. That's about the only good things I have to say about it. And I know that Magnificent Seven was itself a remake of Seven Samurai, but the Japanese movie was by no means as iconic as Magnificent Seven is today.

Also in the cast are Ethan Hawke and Chris Pratt. My hunch is that they won't try to remake the original as much as do a modern day "reimagining." Since the idea of Mexican bandit villains is extremely un-P.C. today, my guess is that they'll be drug dealers. Hawke I can see fitting in, but I don't see Pratt. And the other announced member of the cast really doesn't fit in: Haley Bennett. I'm not sure what her qualifications are since her acting resume is considerably on the skimpy side and there's one huge difference between Bennett and any member of the original cast that pretty much ruins the dynamic of the original movie.

I only hope that they don't try to do a hip hop version of Elmer Bernstein's theme.
