Snowed In

Huntsville Alabama is pretty much shut down in anticipation of getting 3 to 5 inches of snow later today. Wal-Mart was almost out of bread. Redstone Arsenal and Marshall Space Flight Center are closed, so I can't get to work. People just go a bit nuts around here. It'll probably be Friday before we get back to normal.

Just call it a winter holiday and go build some snowmen. :)

The temperatures got up to around 20 today, and the sun was shining. Compared to the month we've been having, it felt like spring! 8)

Snow started at 2 this afternoon, about 7 inches total - quite a bit for here. Looks like Thursday will be another day with everything shut down.

It made it north to Tennessee and dropped about 5" in Knoxville. Going to make for the second week of schools being closed and many businesses closed or on limited hours.

We are so spoiled in the South. Our typical snowstorm will be offset by some sunny, 50-degree weather within a day or two. Snow on the ground hardly ever lasts past two or three days. With all the cold temps, we've had something white on the ground for two weeks now.

Usually, in Boston, we get days of thawing & melting too. Ours are defined as "anything above freezing". But in the past month we've only had a couple such. And people & businesses could have been taking better advantage of them for snow removal, in my opinion. I still walk down whole streets where the snow walls are higher than I am. And even though I've shrunk some in recent years, I'm 5'4".

It's supposed to get above freezing the middle of next week-but they are predicting a possible ice storm. Ice on top of all the snow we've gotten would be icky. We haven't had a thaw since a very brief period in mid-January. Last Friday it was so cold (-30 with the windchill) that they closed schools.
