Be careful what you wish for . . .

I've been whining to SteelersFanSiblings (and anybody else who'll listen) for days about how Colorado's snowpack is so below normal and how we're gonna be fighting forest fires this summer and blah blah blah . . .

See y'all later after I get done shoveling.

DENVER — A powerful storm that dumped heavy snow on parts of Colorado was tapering off in the northeast but warnings of wintry weather remained Monday for some central and southern areas.

The Colorado Springs public works department reported crews were busy clearing streets as a winter storm warning was expected to remain in effect there until about dawn.

Durango had been blanketed in 8.5 inches of snow by Sunday evening and the Durango Herald reported that the storm warning was in force in some southern areas until Monday night.

In the Denver area, where up to a foot of snow fell, dozens of churches canceled services Sunday, leaving phone messages or postings on Facebook asking members of their congregations to spread the word.

Forecasters predicted two feet or more of snow for mountain areas and western slopes of the Front Range by the time it stops falling on Monday, following a lull on Sunday with sub-freezing temperatures. Another round is expected in the middle of the week, lasting through next weekend.

Heath Montgomery, spokesman for Denver International Airport, reported 142 flight cancellations by Sunday morning, in addition to 185 on Saturday.

The storm has been a good snow-maker for the northern and central mountains with 10 to 15 inches at some resorts and a grand total over the weekend of 18 to 24 inches.

Boulder broke a record for the month, with 34 inches of snow compared with 32 inches three years ago.

Last year, Denver International Airport got 38 inches of snow for the season. This year, the airport had about 30 inches of snow before the storm began, and officials expect another 14 inches by Monday morning.

The Colorado Department of Transportation mobilized more than 600 snowplows and urged drivers to follow them up steep mountain highways to avoid spinning out. Some ignored warnings to stay home this weekend. DOT said ski traffic returning to Denver is heavy, with wait times on I-70 of more than an hour.

National Weather Service meteorologist Jim Kalina said Sunday that it's a bit late in the month for heavy, lingering snow and low temperatures, but by no means a record for Colorado. March is usually the snowiest month along the Front Range.

"However, this is pretty good for February," he said.

You'll get no sympathy from this New Englander...

That's just a light dusting compared to Boston.

I just rescheduled an outpatient hospital procedure for late this afternoon. We have far, far less snow than Durango, but between the non-snow/ice-loving Camaro and the two big hills between here and there, I worried that if I even got there, I wouldn't be able to get home again until at least mid-week.

People with SUVs are having no problem, but I want an SUV only two or three weather-challenged days a year.

Vandal, at least, has a beautiful view, and I'm betting that Sprots does, too. My only view is of a shivering Evil Squirrel, who is pissed at all the other tree-dwellers for eating the rest of the bird seed.

My granddaughter in Denver was called and told not to come into work today due to the snow. She works in downtown Denver and the light rail takes her right in front of the restaurant so she'd have no problem getting there. I guess her boss does.

I have a cousin who lives in Colorado Springs. She got 16 inches of snow over the weekend. Meanwhile, we've got a winter weather advisory up for tomorrow-bitterly cold wind chills and blowing snow.

I'm counting days until I get on the plane and fly to sunny warm Florida!

You've got a vacation planned? That's great!

It's always nice seeing folks take the advice of the Ithaca Tourist Board.

Ouch! SteelersFanSIL (sister in law) slipped on a paper-thin layer of ice on a sidewalk, and the unfortunate collision of hip and concrete gave her a hairline fracture of her pelvis. She's in the hospital tonight, but there's really nothing that can be done. They'll send her home tomorrow with instructions to take it easy. This is in Cleveland, OH, where the temp is currently hovering around 6 degrees F. Brr!

Just started snowing again about an hour ago, at least in my little corner of the Back Range.

Here's wishing good luck to your youngun getting out of there.
