Game #150: Pearl Jam

Identify the 75 songs in the clues below. (Most are from the pop charts, but we make a few excursions elsewhere.) Then, match them into 18 pairs and 13 triples according to a Tangredi, or principle you must discover for yourself. Alternate matches may be possible – though I tried awfully hard to avoid it – but only one solution will complete the entire game.

For two matches, I had to stretch a point – but not to the breaking point. It was necessary to complete the puzzle. You’ll see.

Also, one of the matches is an Über-match that’s somewhat different from the other 30. You’ll see.

1. Waitin', watchin' the clock, it's four o'clock, it's got to stop
Tell him, take no more, she practices her speech.
As he opens the door, she rolls over
Pretends to sleep as he looks her over.

2. And I stood arrow straight
Unencumbered by the weight
Of all these hustlers and their schemes.
I stood proud, I stood tall
High above it all
I still believed in my dreams.

3. I'm free but I'm focused
I'm green but I'm wise
I'm hard but I'm friendly, baby
I'm sad but I'm laughing.

4. As she turned the corner
I called out your name
I felt so ashamed
When it wasn't you, wasn't you.

5. Baby, it's all I know
That you're half of the flesh and blood that makes me whole
I need you so.

6. See the girl with cymbals on her fingers
Entering through the door
Ruby glistening from her navel
Shimmering around the floor.

7. Sharp like you pulled me out the pencil sharpener
Bad like that student in the principal’s office
Put rappers in coffins, they dive like dolphins
I'm the damnedest lyrical marvel you come across often!

8. Someone to need you too much.
Someone to know you too well.
Someone to pull you up short,
And put you through hell.

9. Some will come and some will go
We shall surely pass
When the one that left us here
Returns for us at last.
We are but a moment’s sunlight
Fading in the grass.

10. Gave you love
You did me wrong
Didn't know what to do
But, baby, I'm strong
Gonna get over you
A new boy I'm gonna choose
You'll see.

11. Some people live for the fortune.
Some people live just for the fame.
Some people live for the power, yeah.
Some people live just to play the game.

12. Like a tramp in the night
I was begging for you
To treat my body
Like you wanted to.

13. Darling mine
I would wait forever for those lips of wine.

14. My teachers all laugh, the smirking stares,
Cutting deep down in our affairs.
Preachers of equality
Think they believe it, then why won't they just let us be?

15. I can't get any rest,
People say I'm obsessed.
Everything you say is lies,
But to me that's no surprise.

16. Chickity China the Chinese chicken
You have a drumstick and your brain stops tickin'.

17. Where you walk flowers bloom
When you smile all the gloom turns to sunshine
And my heart opens wide
When you're gone it fades inside and seems to have died.

18. Living life is fun and we've just begun
To get our share of the world's delights.
(High!) High hopes we have for our future
And our goal’s in sight!

19. There was a time when
Broken hearts and broken dreams were over.
There was a place where
All you could do was wish on a four leaf clover.

20. We look for love, no time for tears
Wasted water's all that is
And it don't make no flowers grow.
Good things might come to those who wait
Not to those who wait too late
We got to go for all we know.

21. Elephants and acrobats,
Lions next monkey
Pele speaks righteous
Sister Seena says funky.

22. What I feel has come and gone before.
No need to talk it out
We know what it's all about.

23. People say
You've been making out okay,
She's in love don't stand in her way.

24. Vows are spoken
To be broken
Feelings are intense
Words are trivial
Pleasures remain
So does the pain
Words are meaningless
And forgettable.

25. Every day is just the same
Playin' games,
Different lovers, different names.
They keep saying I'll survive
It just takes time.

26. If you gotta crush
(Don't beat about the bush)
When I gotta crush….

27. As they speed through the finish, the flags go down
The fans get up and they get out of town
The arena is empty except for one man
Still driving and striving as fast as he can.

28. Hard to be sure
Some times I feel so insecure
And love so distant and obscure
Remains the cure.

29. Will you love me again like you loved me before?
This time I want you to love me much more
This time instead just come to my bed
And, baby, just don't let me down.

30. To touch is to heal
To hurt is to steal.
If you want to kiss the sky, better learn how to kneel.

31. A sound that flows into my mind
(The echos of the daylight)
Of everything that is alive
In my blue world.

32. See
Don't ever set me free
I always wanna be by your side.

33. Late that night I park my car
Stake my place in the singles bar
Face to face, toe to toe
Heart to heart as we hit the floor.

34. I found an island in your arms
Country in your eyes
Arms that chain
Eyes that lie.

35. Someday, I don't know how
I hope she'll hear my plea.
Some way, I don't know how
She'll bring her love to me.

36. Can you feel me tremble when we touch?
Can you feel the hand of fate
Reaching out to both of us?
This love affair can't wait.

37. Your stare was holding
Ripped jeans
Skin was showing
Hot night
Wind was blowing
Where you think you're going baby?

38. A colonel out in France
Can never take a chance,
For though his job is great,
He dare not make a date;
All that he can do
Is just parley-voo.

39. Blessed is the one who shares
The power and your beauty, Mary.
Blessed is the millionaire
Who shares your wedding day.

40. Take back that sad word good-bye
Bring back the joy to my life
Don't leave me here with these tears
Come and kiss this pain away
I can't forget the day you left
Time is so unkind
And life is so cruel without you here beside me.

41. I tried my best to feed her appetite
Keep her coming every night
So hard to keep her satisfied.

42. Five, thou shalt always have faith in me
In everything I say and do.
Six, love with all your heart and soul
Until our life on Earth is through.

43. Didn't mean to do you wrong again
Worse things have been done by better men.
Baby, baby, don't, don't treat me this way
I know, yes, I've got to pay now, I'm still paying.

44. Rip it up
Move down
Rip it up
Move it down to the ground
Rip it up
Cool down
Rip it up
Get out what's inside of you.

45. There's a song bird on my pillow
I can see the funny weeping willow
I can see the sun
You're on your way and you'll be coming home.

46. Some things take so long
But how do I explain
When not too many people
Can see we're all the same?

47. Don't look so sad, I know it's over
But life goes on and this old world will keep on turning
Let's just be glad we had some time to spend together
There's no need to watch the bridges that we're burning.

48. Time, you found time enough to love
And I found love enough to hold you
So tonight I'll stir the fire you feel inside
Until the flames of love enfold you.

49. Spotlight on Lou Rawls y'all
Ah don't he look tall y'all?
Singin' loves a hurtin' thing now
Oh yeah, oh yeah!

50. You can turn this world around
And bring back all of those happy days.
Put your troubles down
It's time to celebrate!

51. I can't stand this indecision
Married with a lack of vision.

52. Your everlasting summer
You can see it fading fast
So you grab a piece of something
That you think is gonna last.

53. (Work, work.)
Ah, I'm working hard baby.
(Work, work.)
Well, you're driving me crazy.
(Work, work.)
And don't you get lazy.
(Work.)

And when we see the landlord
We can look that guy right in the eye.

You told her about me
She filled you with fear
Some kind of sin.
How can you turn
Denying the fire?
Lover, I burn.
Let me in.

I couldn't retrieve it, said to myself
What's it all about?

Still get my greatest treasure
Heap big woman you done made a big man of me.

Loving you the way I do
My mouth on yours and yours on mine

Some say it's a lotta nerve

First consolidation. I better do this now in case the ongoing snow knocks out my power later.

Needless to say, everything on here is correct!

Thought I'd update the consolidation and see if it sets off any bells.

Game #150: Pearl Jam

Identify the 75 songs in the clues below. (Most are from the pop charts, but we make a few excursions elsewhere.) All of these are correct, of course. So is the one that was added while you were pulling this together. That leaves four unidentified.

Now the fun starts!

You’ll see.

7. Sharp like you pulled me out the pencil sharpener

I'm the damnedest lyrical marvel you come across often!

I had completely forgotten about this song from my college years.

DANGER (BEEN SO LONG), MYSTIKAL

Of course, the better question would be why Frank would include a dirty song like this in his game. Mystikal didn't have that many notable songs, nor did some other artists on this list. I'm thinking that the artists may not necessarily be important.

I'm seeing a lot of song titles that can be made from the words of the titles in this list. Most of these titles I made were by artists who went solo after being in a duo or group.

BEING Alive + When I'm WITH YOU = BEING WITH YOU, Smokey Robinson (The Miracles)
DANGER (Been So Long) + Twilight ZONE = DANGER ZONE, Kenny Loggins (Loggins & Messina)
FOOLISH Beat + Un-Break My HEART = FOOLISH HEART, Steve Perry (Journey)
HOLIDAY + End of the ROAD = HOLIDAY ROAD, Lindsey Buckingham (Fleetwood Mac)
LOVE IS the Drug + LIKE A ROCK = LOVE IS LIKE A ROCK, Donnie Iris (Jaggerz and Wild Cherry)
PENNY Lane + Dream LOVER = PENNY LOVER, Lionel Richie (The Commodores)
TOUCH ME (I Want Your Body) + Early IN THE MORNING = TOUCH ME IN THE MORNING, Diana Ross (The Supremes)
YOU CAN Do Magic + CALL ME Maybe + AL Di La = YOU CAN CALL ME AL, Paul Simon (Simon & Garfunkel)

As far as connecting this to the subject of "Pearl Jam", the "Pearl" had me thinking of Janis Joplin, who went solo from Big Brother & the Holding Company.

But this is probably a dead end.

(By the way, you can also add "I DON'T LIKE to Sleep Alone" and "Rainy Days and MONDAYS" to make "I DON'T LIKE MONDAYS", which has absolutely nothing to do with my suggested Tangredi. :D )
