He was a passenger in a livery car that collided with another vehicle.

The only time I haven't fastened my seatbelt in a private car in the past 15 years, I was driving, it was only a 2 mile drive, I figured "what the hell" (it was also about 100 degrees put at the time, & that car had no AC), someone rear-ended me & my head hit the windshield so hard I was briefly knocked out. And to make it even more fun we were at a railroad crossing at the time.

So I'd say the moral is "always fasten the damn belt". But I'd also say "especially when someone else is driving". But I've been on buses where there were no belts. There are certainly no belts on the currently-infamous T. And I've been on buses where there were belts but I didn't fasten mine, so what kind of hypocrite am I.

Ghost, I was often the same way with buses that had seat belts -- until my first trip to Jamaica.

After the way the folks drive down there, I make sure I have it on, if available. Every. Single. Time.

(BTW, when I took taxis in London and Paris this past year, the drivers were pretty insistent that we put the belts on before they took off. Give them credit for that.)

I should point out I'm discussing this because authorities are saying Mr. Simon did not have his seat belt fastened. His driver did. And survived. It appears that his driver was speeding, but the last I read hadn't been charged.
