Lyrically Speaking - 1/26/15

#1 Post by Gimme A Squiggly » Mon Jan 26, 2015 7:40 am

Welcome back my Meccaites! For this week's Mecca Monday game, we're going to flash back with some of my favorite songs from the 80's I put on my in-store CD's. Let's make this a truly 80's occasion! Frank can put on his parachute pants, melly can get into her neon colored workout clothes, TBone can get a neck full of gold and some shoes with no laces... oh, and you look good in your Boy George outfit, Esto! Er, excuse me a minute...

Can I get customer assistance to the bulk eyeliner aisle please.....

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist....

1. What I've got's full stock
Of thoughts and dreams that scatter
You pull them all together
And how I can't explain

2. There's a boy I know, he's the one I dream of
Looks into my eyes, takes me to the clouds above
Ooh I lose control, can't seem to get enough
When I wake from dreaming, tell me is it really love

3. Dream baby dream
Of all that's come and going
And you will find out in the end
There really is,
There really is no difference

4. Do you remember when we used to dance
And incidence arose from circumstance
One thing lead to another we were young
And we would scream together songs unsung

5. The impression that you sell
Passes in and out like a scent
But the long face that you see comes from living close
To your fears

6. Darkness on the edge
Shadows where I stand
I search for the time
On a watch with no hands

7. We remain tender together
If not so in love
And it's not so wrong; we're only human after all

8. Spreading rumors
So far from true
Dragged up from the underworld
Just like some precious pearl

9. Oh, I've been sad
And have walked bitter streets alone
And come morning
There's a good wind to blow me home

10. Oh the things that you say
Is it live or
Just to play my worries away
You're all the things I've got to remember
You're shying away
I'll be coming for you anyway

11. And she was lying in the grass
And she could hear the highway breathing
And she could see a nearby factory
She's making sure she is not dreaming

12. I took it for granted
but how was I to know
That you'd be lettin' go

Kroxquo Bonus: Name another song with artist from the 80's that you'd put on the Mecca CD.

Image Bonus: Find an image that in some way represents the 1980's...

Considering that my musical tastes fossilized in the early 70s, this should be pretty ugly.

Looks into my eyes, takes me to the clouds above
Ooh I lose control, can't seem to get enough

3. Dream baby dream
Of all that's come and going
And you will find out in the end

On a watch with no hands

These Dreams -- Heart

7. We remain tender together

I remember the video, but I always thought it was just called Human. And I can't remember which group it was, either.

8. Spreading rumors
So far from true
Dragged up from the underworld

Our Lips are Sealed -- Go-Gos

9. Oh, I've been sad
And have walked bitter streets alone
And come morning

And she could hear the highway breathing
And she could see a nearby factory
She's making sure she is not dreaming

And she Was -- Talking Heads. I know you don't normally put titles in the lyrics, but I"m hoping you just didn't catch it this time.

12. I took it for granted
but how was I to know
That you'd be lettin' go

Cuts Like a Knife -- Bryan Adams

Damn... I swear, this is the first time it occurred to me that the title appears in more than just the chorus... and yes, I've heard the song hundreds of times (as well as used it in LS at least 3 times now....)

Post no bills
1. What I've got's full stock
Of thoughts and dreams that scatter
You pull them all together
And how I can't explain

2. There's a boy I know, he's the one I dream of
Looks into my eyes, takes me to the clouds above
Ooh I lose control, can't seem to get enough
When I wake from dreaming, tell me is it really love

3. Dream baby dream
Of all that's come and going
And you will find out in the end
There really is,
There really is no difference

4. Do you remember when we used to dance
And incidence arose from circumstance
One thing lead to another we were young
And we would scream together songs unsung

5. The impression that you sell
Passes in and out like a scent
But the long face that you see comes from living close
To your fears

6. Darkness on the edge
Shadows where I stand
I search for the time
On a watch with no hands

7. We remain tender together
If not so in love
And it's not so wrong; we're only human after all

8. Spreading rumors
So far from true
Dragged up from the underworld
Just like some precious pearl

9. Oh, I've been sad
And have walked bitter streets alone
And come morning
There's a good wind to blow me home

10. Oh the things that you say
Is it live or
Just to play my worries away
You're all the things I've got to remember
You're shying away
I'll be coming for you anyway

11. And she was lying in the grass
And she could hear the highway breathing
And she could see a nearby factory
She's making sure she is not dreaming

12. I took it for granted
but how was I to know
That you'd be lettin' go

Blanket guess for artist: Wham!

Kroxquo Bonus: Name another song with artist from the 80's that you'd put on the Mecca CD. Rhythm of the Night, DeBarge

Image Bonus: Find an image that in some way represents the 1980's...

Gimme A Squiggly
Welcome back my Meccaites! For this week's Mecca Monday game, we're going to flash back with some of my favorite songs from the 80's I put on my in-store CD's. Let's make this a truly 80's occasion! Frank can put on his parachute pants, melly can get into her neon colored workout clothes, TBone can get a neck full of gold and some shoes with no laces... oh, and you look good in your Boy George outfit, Esto! Er, excuse me a minute... (That was actually my costume for Halloween one year...)

Can I get customer assistance to the bulk eyeliner aisle please.....

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist....

There were a lot of great 80's icons posted here, even with the three identical shots of the original VJ's... but despite the fact that it was probably better placed in Phyllis' game, I have to give the 5 point IBB to Vandal for The Hoff soap dispenser...

don't remember these lyrics at all...I googled them after posting my answers to see what it was..most of the hits on it were crediting Hilary Duff as the artist..could it be this verse was only added for the remake..or possibly...if I'm recalling correctly, the band may have recorded this on a small indie label before getting the major label deal, so maybe this lyric was on an early version..I also looked the song up on a couple of lyrics sites and did not see this verse included. I thought about mentioning this, but the lack of spoiler-blocking ability
and a sense of "for Heaven's Sake, you got all of the other ones, don't be a whiner" kept me from doing so. Perhaps someone else might know the origin of this verse?

I heard Hilary in my head when I heard the lyrics, but I just assumed the Gogos did that verse on an album version or something. The Duff girls did it either on the soundtrack for Cinderella Story, or as a companion piece when the movie came out. I remember the video pretty clearly.

Reading about it on Songfacts, the Gogos (and Fun Boy Three) version is a little darker and less fun when you know the backstory. Jane Wiedlin says it's about her and Terry Hall's affair, which might explain the Duffs going away from some of the original lyrics, too.

The (2:47) version from "Beauty and the Beat" does not include them. They may have been cut for time. The Go-go's seem to have messed around quite a bit with the ordering and inclusion of the lyrics of this song, but seem to favor them when performing live.

This seems to match the "Beauty and the Beat" version:

They included the lyrics in question as far back as 1981 (:47 mark):
