AP wrote:SANTA ANA, Calif. — Seven Californians and two people in Utah have confirmed cases of measles likely contracted on trips last month to Disney theme parks in California, state officials said Wednesday.

Three more California residents are suspected of having measles. All patients with confirmed or suspected cases of the illness visited Disneyland or Disney California Adventure between Dec. 15 and Dec. 20, according to the state's Department of Public Health.

They likely got the airborne illness at one of the parks then, officials said, adding people with measles can be infectious for nine days.

Yeah, I'm waiting for polio to make a comeback thanks to all the anti-vax idiots.

The local paper just did a big series of articles a couple weeks ago about people who don't vaccinate their kids and it said that Michigan is near the top of the list when it comes to non-vaccinations. That is going to change, because a new law just went into effect. Parents who are thinking about not vaccinating have to talk with a healthcare professional and learn about the benefits of vaccinations and the diseases (like measles) they prevent.

They had an outbreak of whooping cough (another vaccine-preventable disease) in Traverse City that was so bad it closed a school because many of the kids got sick.

People who don't vaccinate their kids (or keep up to date on their own vaccines) are idiots.

Last week I got into it on a Facebook thread when he said he was against getting a flu shot because it "affected the immune system and caused harmful inflammation." Well duh! Don't you think the actual flu is 100 times worse?

I think you're right that requiring a talk with a healthcare professional before using the philosophical exemption will help, but, really, we should just get rid of the exemption altogether.

And I feel like the Gazette could have done a much better job than they did. There was a huge article, taking up basically all of a section front page, on the idiot parents who won't vaccinate, with no rebuttal at all. On the plus side, the kids' new pediatricians, when I called up to set up appointments, said they'd only take on new patients if they were following the standard vaccine schedule (or had a valid medical reason not to).

That's a stupid reason not to get a flu shot. A better reason is that they just don't work...

I'm the only one in my family who never gets a flu shot.... and also the only one in my family who ends up never getting the flu. And it isn't like I don't get plenty of exposure to it at Mecca....

The article had a map of Michigan in it which showed every county and how many exemptions there were. Surprisingly, the biggest number were in Oakland and Livingston Counties, which are two of the most affluent in the whole state. Apparently there are supposedly educated parents out there who don't believe in scientifically accepted forms of disease prevention.

I agree with all that's been said, especially re:kid vaccs. We will need to get whooping cough vaccs before we can handle the new grandbabe. Thanks non-vaccinators!

Then don't waste your $20. However I not only was paid back the $20 by my employer but Safeway gave me a 10% discount on everything I bought in their store that day.

Beast!!! You could be ground zero as a vaccine development. You're the missing link!

Whooping Cough is resurging because the current vaccine is not as effective as previous vaccines

Interesting. Did not know that, not that I would. Why is that? A few years back my niece, her daughter and my sisgot wwhooping cough after having the vaccine. Not cause and effect, just that they'd had it and then contracted after a bit. What's the deal with dpt?

A contributing factor, still, was non vaccinations.

I'm missing a lot of links!

I did have the flu when I was in 5th grade, but all I get anymore are regular colds. I credit my complete rejection of antimicrobial crap... it's the obsession to wipe and clean everything and wash your hands every 10 minutes that will kill you all...

I'm totally pro kiddie vaccines, but the flu shot is a joke. Really, it is... and I've always been able to get one for free if I wanted at Mecca...

You're right. It's like having animules in the house to keep babes in the immunity mix. Only thing is if working in a sitch meeting different peeps, shaking hands normally, if crap is going around, eh, I'll wave.

It's funny, because the one time we met, I was sick. That was the year I caught a cold while I was super stressed out and stuck in Tulsa traffic in a thunderstorm... and it was all downhill from there....

The only flu shot I ever received was a "swine flu" vaccine I administered in the school cafeteria in a line of every student there that day. I don't think we had a choice. (That was a long time ago, BTW...)

I have never had the flu and sort of agree with LB. If not broken, don't fix it. Now vaccinations against childhood diseases is a different story. Being one of five children, when I grew up we all had chicken pox and measles at the same time! Our poor mother!
We also had to have a typhoid shot if we were going to summer camp that year. Those polio shots were horrible and that oral vaccine was a God send.

I went to Costa Rica with a high school group, and if your tetanus and hepatitis vaccines weren't current, you didn't go. I'm glad I had to get them, I probably would have put it off, and now I'm protected from hepatitis the rest of my life and from tetanus until 2016 or so.

Does anybody know anything about Hepatitis B? My insurance company keeps suggesting I should get a vaccine since they think if you have diabetes (even a mild sort) that you are more susceptible to other things. I buy into that, and take a superdose of Vitamin D once a week, but just haven't spent any time reading up on Hep B.

I can Google it, really - I am asking if anyone has first- or second-hand experience with it beyond what Dr. Google will tell me. Thanks.

My wife is considered at higher risk than most for Hep B, since she works in a dental office where injections are routinely done. Because of the way the disease is transmitted, I doubt that you are at much risk unless you self inject insulin or any other drug. I think the insurance company probably has diabetes and hep linked because of the injection issue, not because of immune syndrome issues. Hep B is hard to catch for most people, but incurable and nasty if you do get it.

The CDC started recommending Hepatatis B vaccinations for diabetics under 65 because a person with diabetes has a strong likelihood of having blood glucose fingerstick testing done in a hospital or nursing facility at some point in their life. If the glucose testing equipment is not kept completely sterile, there is a risk of Hepatitis B (which is transmitted by blood) getting accidentally spread from an infected patient to another patient. The Hepatitis B vaccination (which takes 3 shots over a several month period) can protect a diabetic against this potential risk. Ideally there would never be cross-contamination from one patient to another in a health care setting, but since we know it does happen we want to reduce this danger as much as possible.
I don't know how they arrived at the age cutoff to recommend this only to diabetics under 65 years old.

Thanks, mrkelley and thguy. Good info.

I do give myself a "shot" every night from a pen with a small needle (Victoza), but it's pretty easy to keep clean. I rarely finger-test anymore since I can pretty well tell what my sugar level is by the way I feel.

I'll ask my doc for her opinion next time I see her and not think about it again until then.
