I just came back from visiting my parents in The Woodlands. What a beautiful town. Are there any BB's who live in The Woodlands? If so, you are so lucky.

Thank you. I didn't know if it was a new place in CA that I hadn't heard of.

To correct the Uly, north of Houston. We're what's called a "master planned community." Like Columbia, Md or Reston, VA. We've also recently undergone some governmental changes that will transition the 87,000 or so residents' services under what's called The Woodlands Township, etc. etc.
I work for the entities that provide municipal services. If we were a city, we'd be city hall. We're not a city. We're a special purpose district.
And it IS a great place to live. If I do say so myself.

I'm sorry. I'm sure they had to check their non-designer shoes and regular cars in order to enter the inner sanctum and all. OUR greeters are attired in golf shirts.

Since Merv lives there, it's probably the bestest community association in Texas.

But is the evil squirrel population under control?

I think I'm going to try out my downtown-Houston-snob-voice.
The Woodlands? That's halfway to Dallas, isn't it?

Nah. Just halfway to Conroe. Now THERE's a destination.

This made me laugh and I am sure I don't get half the reference - just the downtown snob voice is precious.

My parents moved to Creekside Park and it is so beautiful. No squirrels so far, but a frog and a lizard visited the yard. Traffic is a little heavier than I thought, but doesn't compare to the Katy Freeway during rush hour or any interstate in Chicago. Any suggestions for restaurants and shopping? We went to Pappasitos, Taste of Texas, PF Changs, pot bellies and they were great. Greenspoint Mall disappointed us, but the Woodlands Mall was very nice.
I would love to move there, but my husband loves Chicago and all the cold and snow for some reason.

LOL.
Spot on.
I think we will be going to the Woodlands for a Radiohead concert in May.
We are thinking of taking the kids. They love Radiohead, can recognize their music on the radio, and have favorites among their CDs.
The concert is going to happen on my son's birthday. He says he wants to go to the concert as his present.
The concert will be late, and likely loud. We will do the earplug things and try to get them to sleep early the night before. It will be a grand experiment.
I think we will spend the night at the in laws house in Conroe to make the drive shorter. The Woodlands is a hike.

But isn't everything a hike in Houston?!

Nope. Work, baseball stadium, basketball/hockey arena and the rest of downtown are a short walk to me. The Museum District, the Medical Center, and the football stadium are a short train ride. The university football/MLS soccer stadium and my favorite soccer bar are 5 minute drives away.
And soon, hopefully, the new soccer stadium will be right out my window. Not everything in Houston is a hike if you live in the right place.

I can see the USC women's soccer field from my window. Oh yes, they're the NCAA 2007 champions. But I get better pictures if I walk across the street.

To the original question, I answered "Houston" because for the rest of us, there is little point in saying The Woodlands is x miles outside of town. My folks live in Indian Trail, N.C., but that is meaningless to anyone outside of Charlotte (and many people INSIDE Charlotte), so I tell people they live in Charlotte.
But looking at the map just now was fun, because I saw Humble, TX, to which I sent a book proposal the other day, and dint know where it was exactly.

The area where I live used to be unincorporated and had an Atlanta mailing address. Two years ago it became the city of Sandy Springs. However, they still recognize an Atlanta mailing address which I use on all my correspondence (so I won't need to print up new business cards, etc., which I had to do a few years earlier when they changed my street name). I figure it eliminates a lot of confusion for most people, and we only live about two miles outside the Atlanta city limits.
The only time I listed my address as Sandy Springs was on my Jeopardy application. I figured that they would be more likely to pick a contestant from Sandy Springs than the millionth contestant from Atlanta so I'd have an original hometown howdy. It hasn't seemed to have done much good though.

You don't seem like the Galleria type, so that doesn't count.

Humble is pronounced UMBLE, with no H.
The Woodlands is so different than the rest of Houston. Most of the businesses are hidden behind trees.

Funny the things you can learn by reading Harry Turtledove's alternate history novels!
But the good folks of Humble probably don't like their role in his
Settling Accounts series.

I used to live north of Humble but still within the city limits of Houston. The city of Houston went around Humble to annex Kingwood.
31 miles from downtown and I was still inside the city limits.
Hmmm. I just checked. That's pretty much the same distance as from The Woodlands to downtown. Seems farther to The Woodlands.
