OK, the bloviators have been in a tizzy about 'a man is pregnant,' they've been on Oprah, all over the media. I am puzzled as to why that is big news. The individual involved is genetically female, was born with ovaries and a uterus, and still has ovaries and a uterus; he/she/they had her/his/their boobs removed and was taking testosterone shots for a while, but stopped, and then was artificially inseminated, and is now pregnant. Why is this news? People with ovaries and a uterus get pregnant all the time.

There is the sideshow back story, which is that he/she/they is/are part of a married couple, and he/she/they has/have a wife (who, has had babies in the past but apparently cannot get pregnant due some medical issues), but this has not been the focus-- everyone is going on about the 'miracle' of this pregnant 'man.' But physically, biologically, genetically, reproductive-systemically, the individual is a female. So why is this news?

And every single story that I have seen has also made note of the fact that they are not interested in publicity. Which is why, I guess, they are on every single news show that exists, and giving interviews to every media outlet conceivable. Or inconceivable. Or something.

I wonder what the health of the baby will be since he/she took male hormones. I think it is very selfish of him/her to risk the baby's health for his/her quest to be a dad/mom. They should have adopted. I agree, you don't go on Oprah unless you want the whole world to know.

Then there is the question of how bad the child will be teased at school for having his dad/mom give birth to him. Yuk! Poor child.

I think inappropriate indignation should be expressed wherever possible. Since as how this defies any sort of any dignation at all...

This reminds me of the story about the couple with the 17-month-old kid who can read:

Yeah, right. They're both speech pathologists and they don't know where to find language experts?

Someone once told me that if you are told that "it's not about the money" that that is code for "it's all about the money."

He/she/it should enlist with Barnum & Bailey's and be on display right next to the bearded lady or the man with the reptilian face.

First thought when I ran across the story: Schwarzeneggar and DeVito.

Second thought, when I saw they were going public in order to "control the publicity": How much are you getting for the story?

Third thought: Why does the media think we should give a rat's ass? I agree with SirG, stick him/her in the side show with the mermaid and pencil-necked geek and let the Enquirer, Inside Edition and the British tabloids cover it. IT IS NOT SERIOUS NEWS!!!!

I think the pregnant guy wrote an article for The Advocate about their situation....I read it a couple of months ago and it was very interesting. The article was more about the plight they found themselves in (very much wanting a child with this being their only biological option, the difficulty they faced in finding an OB willing to see them, etc) but I don't think they expected or wanted the kind of mass media attention that followed. They tried to keep a low profile in subsequent articles that were written about them - but the story just didn't die. At that point, what do you do when people won't leave you alone? Go on Oprah, where you'll get a full hour to explain your situation to a relatively sympathetic ear.

A very good friend of mine is a female-to-male transsexual. My friend's situation is very similar to this guys: he's had 'top surgery' but has done nothing to parts down below. In my friend's case, it is because it is extremely expensive and because the track record for this surgery isn't all that encouraging. My friend has chosen to wait and see if more advancements are made, first.

Anyway...my friend, like many ftm transsexuals, isn't terribly comfortable with his girl parts. Never has been, even before realizing why. This seems to be a pretty common thread among people in their situation. And the testosterone injections are essential for 'passing' as a man and feeling like a man. Given all that....that this guy would suspend his injections and subject himself to the supremely feminine act of pregnancy is quite remarkable, and to me it speaks to how very much they must want children. That's impressive to me. I guess some people see it as 'having his cake and eating it too'....that its unfair that he can have it both ways. But I see it as more a sacrifice on his part to make their dream happen.

Just an assumption though, as I didn't see his Oprah interview. He may feel differently for all I know.
