Heading for Reno

I'm flying to Reno tomorrow to play in the year-end regional there. This tournament, which used to be quite large, has fallen on hard times and this will be the last edition for the foreseeable future.
My partner is competing for a national Mini McKenney award in the 500-1000 point bracket. He had a good tournament at Palm Springs and thinks he's neck and neck with his competitor.
My own goal is a little more modest. I need another 0.75 points to hit 500 for the year, and I have a shot at winning my District's Mini McKenney award for my category (1000-2500). Finishing the tournament with 22.20 would let me hit a nice round number (2700), but I know my partner has higher aspirations than that. Wish us luck (of the good variety, please)! --Bob

Thanks. For reasons beyond my understanding my (work) iPhone isn't bringing in Internet sites so I'll only be able to provide updates from the Business Center here.
Game time today is at 2:00 p.m. For the rest of the week (until New Year's Eve) it's at 1:00 p.m. and then an 11:00 a.m. start on New Year's Eve.
I got a nice review at the office before I left so I'm indulging myself with an occasional massage while I'm here. Play nice everyone! --Bob

Played the top bracket of the two-day knockout yesterday but lost our first match. Got a little redemption in the evening by finishing second in the "loser Swiss." That put me over 500 points for the year. I have now satisfied all of the current requirements for Life Master (including the colored point requirements) in a single calendar year.
I'm not sure what we're playing today. Our preference is to play team events but we don't have teammates for the rest of the tournament. We both have friends looking out for candidates for us, though. --Bob

Completely struck out yesterday. Lost another first match in a two-day knockout (top bracket again), and then (because our teammates overslept) played the pairs side game in the evening and failed to scratch.
My partner did make it to the finals of the morning Compact Knockout (playing as I write) so the day wasn't a total loss for him. However, his competition in the Mini McKenney race made it to the semifinals of the top bracket in the two-day knockout that started yesterday, assuring himself of at least 18 points.
Pairs today, and then our last shot at a two-day knockout tomorrow. --Bob

Had a really awful afternoon session. Came back to scratch in the evening, but this tournament is not going as I'd hoped. My partner's competitor has gained a little less than 20 points on him so far this tournament. We're not sure, but we think this means the national race is now neck-and-neck. --Bob

More of the same. Another first-round loss in the last two-day knockout event of the tournament. We did manage to win the side game, but my partner's chance at the Mini McKenney title is all but gone.
We're playing a Compact Knockout today and still hoping to find teammates for tomorrow. --Bob

We won Bracket 2 of the final Compact Knockout, but the payoff was quite small. While we were doing that, my partner's competition won the morning Compact Knockout and then won yesterday's Open Pairs event. It looks like it's all over but the shouting.
We do have teammates for today's Swiss, though, and I am hoping for a good showing that will put my lifetime total above 2700. --Bob

I'm back.
Our showing in the final event was barely above average, which wasn't enough to score any "overall" points. After the last game, I took in a movie at the on-property theater, where I ran into an acquaintance of kusch whose 13 points (by her account, if I understood her correctly) more or less doubled her lifetime total.
I ended up winning 513.92 points for the year, but my lifetime total has not yet reached 2700. I should appear on the Barry Crane Top 500 list for 2014, and I'm either first or second in my District's Mini McKenney race. Preliminary results should be posted roughly Tuesday, and final results will appear in February (to make sure all clubs and end-of-year events have ample time to report). --Bob

Congrats on a very good year. Yes, Maye let me know she met you. I think she has a few more mps than what she told you.
