In an unusual move, NBC has announced its new schedule, not just for next fall, but all the way to summer 2009. Of course, many of the shows currently listed may be moved up as others fall by the wayside. Here are some highlights:

The Bionic Woman, Scrubs, Amnesia, 1 vs. 100 and The Singing Bee are gone. Scrubs may move to ABC. Law and Order Criminal Intent will be on USA Network. ER is back for a final 19-episode season straight through with no repeats. After ER finishes, Celebrity Aprrentice will take its place. Friday Night Lights, Medium and the original Law and Order will be back in January. Deal or No Deal will be two nights a week, Wednesday and Friday. Chuck, Heroes and Life, which are not returning this spring, will be back in the fall.

New series this fall include Knight Rider, will Val Kilmer as the voice of KITT; Crusoe, about Robinson Crusoe (I can't tell from the description I got if this will be set in the present day or the past), and My Own Worst Enemy, with Christian Slater as a guy who has a split personality, both a nerd and a secret agent.

In the winter will be a spinoff of The Office, along with Merlin, set in ancient Camelot and featuring a young cast, Kings, set in modern times and featuring a young soldier trying to rescue the heir (played by Ian McShane) to a fictional kingdom, and The Philanthropist, a new twist on the old show The Millionaire, about a guy trying to give all his money away.

I can hardly wait.....

Looks like PSM will be subscribing to DirectTV. They'll be showing the new episodes before NBC.

“Friday Night Lights” will play on for a third season under a partnership with DirecTV, which will offer the small-town drama first to its 16.8 million satellite subscribers exclusively starting in October.

The 13 new episodes that have been ordered will air at 9 o’clock on NBC’s Friday night lineup soon after the network’s broadcast of the Super Bowl in winter 2009.

Rumors had raised hopes in fervent fans’ hearts that the ratings-challenged “Lights” might get another shot at the success they believe it deserves. But it wasn’t until Wednesday, when NBC unveiled its 2008-09 programming plans to advertisers, that it made the hopes real.

Ben Silverman, co-chairman of NBC Entertainment and Universal Media Studios, described it as “one show we all believe in.”

On a more pragmatic level, the partnership with DirecTV may enable the critically adored series to build enough of an episodic archive to facilitate a syndication deal that eventually rewards NBC for sticking by the series.

Oh man, this really bothers me. I have Time-Warner Cable and I don't want a dish.

One of my friends has Direct TV and I am going to have to ask her to make DVDs of the show for me because I don't want to wait to see it.

Damn! Now they'll never take my suggestions to fix the show and make it about 101 contestants and not just one cherry-picked uber-personable one.

You forgot to mention that Journeyman didn't get renewed either. I'm disappointed - the show had just gotten to the point where it was beginning to explore the mystery and now (short of it being picked up by a cable channel) we'll never know.

I suspect that, like Dexter on CBS, these will be shows that have already run on USA but are "new" for the network. I believe that new Monk episodes are due on USA starting in June.

I was thinking more like The Mosquitos, or the current equivalents of Vito Scotti and Curt Russell.

Since Merlin "youthens", you shouldn't be able to have an entirely young cast, even if Merlin isn't lured off and Arthur killed. Either Merlin is old and Arthur is young, or Merlin is young and Arthur is old.

Given the intensity of Arthurian fans, the premise and scripts are going to have to be VERY good to pass muster.

After putting the kiddle to bed last night, we turned on the tv and there was an all new episode of My Name Is Earl on the DVR. Nice surprise.
