I suspect Obama would have gotten upset
http://time.com/3637412/obama-racism-in ... le-barack/
My dad (who is whiter than white) at age 72 has bought a new (or slightly used) cadillac every year, or 18 months, since 1988. He has always paid cash. This last month he did it again. He is now wearing an eye patch because of eye bulging(Graves disease?) and he looks pretty tough.
He was working with a salesman that he has not worked with before and the sales man told him that he didn't think he could afford a new cadillac. Obviously poor sales techniques as Dad paid cash for it.
But with all the stuff going on like the Obama's playing the race card above-I bet if this had happened to them in the past they would have now played it as a race card.
This crap happens to everybody-get over yourselves.

What the hell does your father's experience have to do with race? Why are you seeing that in racist terms?Spock wrote:http://time.com/3637412/obama-racism-in ... le-barack/

Suitguy is not bitter.
feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive
The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

Re: I suspect Obama would have gotten upset
Just wondering why the question mark after Graves Disease, Spock. Eye bulging is definitely a symptom, one which Saucy and I have mercifully avoided. Here's a list of other common symptoms:Spock wrote: . . .

. . .
Goiter (enlarged thyroid)
Trouble sleeping.
Irritability or nervousness.
Heat sensitivity, increased sweating.
Hand tremors.
Rapid heartbeat.
Thinning of skin or fine, brittle hair.
Frequent bowel movements.
The hand tremors (not noticeable unless I'm looking for it, and I never wanted to be a surgeon anyway) and frequent bowel movements didn't bother me (twice a day instead of once), and I never experienced goiter or thinning/brittle hair, but the trouble sleeping and rapid heartbeat contributed to hypertension, already a problem for me. A simple blood test diagnosed me, and I was soon on medication to control the ailment, and I probably will be for the rest of my life.
Sorry for all the verbiage. It was by way of urging you to urge your father to get tested, and if it is Graves, help him get it under control.

I am kind of chuckling about Obama's frame of reference for racism as "Being mistaken for a Valet." That is a somewhat elite reference. So, in this "racist society" he views places with valet parking as a common frame of reference.
I suspect the only place my dad has seen valet parking is in Las Vegas over the course of a few trips there.
Obama says "No black man my age has not been confused for a valet." Have most black men in the Mississippi Delta or the Alabama Black Belt even been to a place with Valet Parking. The same applies to poor whites in Appalachia. Are they commonly frequenting venues with Valet Parking?
I am 48-and I have seen it in Vegas and maybe one or two events in the twin cities over the course of my life.
Venues with Valet Parking are a little thin on the ground in the vast majority of the country.

Valet parking is very prevalent in Houston. And no black person would ever be mistaken for a valet here.Spock wrote: I am 48-and I have seen it in Vegas and maybe one or two events in the twin cities over the course of my life.

Did you read the article you linked to? That's not what he said. He said:
"There’s no black male my age who’s a professional who hasn’t come out of a restaurant and is waiting for their car and somebody didn't hand them their car keys."

I probably seen hundreds of valets in downtown Austin over the years, but I don't think any of them were black. They mostly look like stereotypical frat boys. Not sure I've ever seen a female valet, either.
Buying Cadillacs with cash - why? Does your father normally keep tens of thousands of dollars in cash around the house? Or does he withdraw the cash from a bank and take it down to the dealership? In any case, it complicates the transaction when the amount exceeds $10K in cash. You can go to jail for presumed money laundering if you don't fill out the required federal paperwork.

Qualify as cash as in "I paid cash" but not for the federal money laundering rules.Beebs52 wrote:Um, I think checks, those things made of paper, qualify as cash?

Re: I suspect Obama would have gotten upset
And you've conveniently missed the point as well. The issue isn't whether white people get pigeonholed or profiled unfavorably, but whether blacks and other minorities do so in disproportionate numbers. And they do.Spock wrote: Obama says "No black man my age has not been confused for a valet." More nonsmokers than smokers die of lung cancer each year. That doesn't mean that smoking isn't a major cause of lung cancer or that people shouldn't quit smoking because they might die of lung cancer anyway.
And I think that Obama was speaking in more general terms. Not that all middle aged black men have been confused as valets, but that they have been unfavorably (and demeaningly) profiled at various times in their lives.
