Just heard a story on NPR News about "Black Eye Fridays" which is apparently a British thing for the Friday prior to Christmas when the partying (and excesses) take off. Can't say I'd ever heard of it before, but it's, well, interesting.

My first thought was "flip-flops? Is this one of these Britishisms that's different from American usage?" But, it turns out it's, indeed, cheap flip-flops for ladies who have gotten too drunk to handle high heels and don't want to walk barefoot.The pastors will be on patrol tonight and Saturday carrying blankets and flip-flops to help revellers in distress.
