Learn something new every day - "Black Eye Friday"

#1 Post by SpacemanSpiff » Fri Dec 19, 2014 9:16 am

Just heard a story on NPR News about "Black Eye Fridays" which is apparently a British thing for the Friday prior to Christmas when the partying (and excesses) take off. Can't say I'd ever heard of it before, but it's, well, interesting.

What I found interesting was one line early on in the story:
The pastors will be on patrol tonight and Saturday carrying blankets and flip-flops to help revellers in distress.
My first thought was "flip-flops? Is this one of these Britishisms that's different from American usage?" But, it turns out it's, indeed, cheap flip-flops for ladies who have gotten too drunk to handle high heels and don't want to walk barefoot.

The things you learn on the radio. :P

Television can be educational too. I first heard about Boxing Day on an episode of M*A*S*H. --Bob
