I am eh about Sondheim but possibly it is just that one song I hate ("The Ladies Who Lunch").

The cast looks amazing.

I watched "The Devil Wears Prada" with my mom a few days ago. I hadn't seen it before. I think this is the first time Emily Blunt and Meryl Streep are together since then.

I saw the theatrical version, which premiered its Broadway-bound revival here at the Ahmanson in 2002. Vanessa Williams played the witch. Two other cast members, who are much better known now, were Laura Benanti (Go On, Royal Pains, last year's Sound of Music Live! and, currently, Nashville) and Molly Ephraim (currently Mandy on Last Man Standing).

Christine Baranski - came up as a song and dance lady on Broadway - she was amazing in Mamma Mia

Frances de la Tour has been a hoot in the BBC show Vicious

I think I get Sondheim better now. He is not about the showstopping or even the hummable song. I'm glad this one is not sung-through, like Wicked or Les Miz. His music is rather challenging to listen to so it's good to have dialogue around it.

James Corden, who won a Tony last year for a one-man show, is the emotional heart of the movie. I wanted to resent him for taking over from Craig Ferguson, but I may have to watch now.

Anna Kendrick = amazing.

Emily Blunt - good but I wasn't blown away. But good, especially her acting.

Lilla Crawford - I got to see her last year on Broadway in Annie. Interesting.

Christine Baranski - 2-3 cute scenes but nothing remarkable.
Johnny Depp - hilarious in his three scenes.
Frances de la Tour is in a role that anyone could have played and we don't recognize her, so no goodness there.

Chris Pine was so careful to not "do" Shatner in the Star Trek remakes, but he is all over the pauses and the poses in this part (one of the princes), to wonderfully funny effect.

Meryl Streep has still got terrific vocals even at 65. I fell in love with her as a singer in Postcards From the Edge, and have often thought her purely acting roles used her musical voice to great effect when that was appropriate. She has probably the most songs (about four) and kicks ass in all of them.

Act I is where everyone mostly gets their wishes, and in Act II there are consequences. Nasty ones.

On reflection, I am kind of angry at Sondheim for him making us pay for his horrible childhood (his mother said her only regret was giving birth to him).
