Buffalo is closed for the weekend

#1 Post by Bob78164 » Thu Nov 20, 2014 5:41 pm

Or something like that anyway. The hockey game between the Rangers and the Buffalo Sabres has been postponed. The NFL game that had the Jets scheduled to play at Buffalo will be moved to a neutral location. --Bob

For those of us in the Deep South who might see 6 inches of snow every ten years, the images coming out of Buffalo look almost apocalyptic.

Letterman was supposed to have a California band, Hundred Waters, on his show last night, but they didn't have a way to get to NYC. The Barr Brothers (from Montreal) performed instead.

The NFL game is moving to Monday night in Detroit.

One of our former conductors, who had moved onto the bigger professional Richmond Symphony a few years ago as Associate Conductor, had agreed to move to a similar position in the Buffalo Orchestra last year, but backed out later on. She said it was primarily because she liked life here in Richmond (she's since got a gig as an associate professor of music at VCU), but also said she dreaded the winters in Buffalo.

I don't think she's regretting that decision right now.

In this case, use of the more technically “correct” term is actually less likely to convey the key implications to a lay audience.

This is the second time an NFL game has been moved to Detroit because of weather. A few years back, the Vikings had to move a game there when the roof of the Metrodome collapsed.

My PAF from once upon a time, astronmr, lived in the Buffalo area. How long has it been since he posted? I wonder if he's still there and how he's doing...

The fun part is going to be when all that snow melts. --Bob

I would be interested to see what the liquid equivalent of the Buffalo snow ends up being. I seem to remember one of my weather teachers saying that Lake Effect snow is (ironcially) very dry and powdery because it falls at much colder temps than frontal snowstorms generally do. If the conversion rate is 20:1 or even 30:1, the melting shouldn't be as bad as one would assume it would be...

AFAIK, modern stadiums are built with drains all over the place. That's how they clean 'em. They come in with crews and hose it all clean. The drains should work just fine, as I would expect the melting snow to be mostly debris-free.

We're under a freezing rain advisory for very early tomorrow morning-it goes into effect at 4AM and runs to 9AM. Then the temps start to rise into the 40s by mid afternoon and we get just plain rain. The rain continues into Sunday and all our snow will melt, causing minor flooding. The TV people are telling folks to clean out their gutters and storm drains so the snow will have someplace to go other than the streets or someone's roof.

The weatherman said we might get more snow just in time for Thanksgiving.
I'm just a game show nerd.
