They should have shown a clip of Erin chopping trees. Watch this:

YouTube has a bunch of videos of Erin's lumberjill skills, which are much more impressive than her game show talents.

If I couldn't solve this, I'd send back my math Ph.D. diploma. Still, I was disappointed that both Erin and Stacy had no clue, and couldn't even test the four answers to find the right one.

Thanks for that video, jarnon! That was a rate of just over 4 seconds per tree, which sounded impossible to me. I noticed that they had peeled the bark off of those trees in advance (and whittled them down to a standard thickness?) which made it possible to slice through most of them with one stroke. Impressive, yes, but I wonder if she ever had to pass the written test.

I think I've heard this question before. First of all, the Ivy Leaguers wouldn't have been warned that this was a "tricky math question"; they'd be given a bunch of questions of which this was just one more (that they'd generally get wrong). Secondly, if you're going to ask this question in multiple choice format, why would you leave out the wrong answer that most people fall for? Even with that warning--it's a trap!--Erin immediately wanted to answer $.10 just like everyone else. Erin was so shocked that that choice wasn't there that she had no idea how to proceed to reason out the question, even with her friend's help. After the answer was revealed, all she could say was "why?"

This question earns a new category: the Quadruple Eye Roll!

Erin said she wasn't good a geography. While "Glen" might have been a geographic hint, this was a straightforward current events question.

The election in Scotland took place September 18th. Had this episode been taped already, or were the writers anticipating it and phrasing it in the past tense?

The Latin word for iron is "ferrum", from which the symbol Fe comes. FIAT is an acronym so the only answer it could be is Ferrari.

I liked her and was rooting for her, but how she handled this question (lots of extra chatter) made me flinch. Surely a lumberjack competition winner is familiar with bruises and contusions. OTOH, what about a bruise would make you go to the ER? OTOH, if it only looks like a bruise but may be a break or a sprain, you would go to the ER to have it checked out and welcome the news that it was only a contusion. OTOH, the other three would certainly not find you at the ER.

This was painful to watch. From the comfort of my Stratolounger (kidding . . .), I went at it backward. I started with .30 and added a dollar, then .20 and added a dollar, then .15 and added a dollar, but then it was obvious it was gonna be .05.

I know people with severe chest pain from gas that they mistook for a heart attack, and a woman with a tooth infection that spread to her bloodstream. Never heard of a life-threatening hangnail, though.

Aargh! What I don't know about medical maladies! Thanks, Jarnon.
