Yes, I am having fun. I have a pretty good advantage, though, since I direct the Thursday afternoon 199er group. The participants tend to be more relaxed than the more competitive Tuesday evening and Friday afternoon groups, and the director calls are often procedural. For example, I had one newbie East smoosh her cards together with North's cards, and I pulled a hand record to sort them out. Fortunately, it was a hand I had already played. Otherwise I would have had to recruit somebody else who had already played it, creating a delay for two tables.
My chief difficulty is playing at the Senior Center. The price is right (free), but the canasta players are right next door, and they use an automatic shuffler. The people with hearing aids can't abide the racket, so we have to close the door to give them a little relief. Two doors away is the line dancing class, and the instructor uses the Center's sound system, so we close the big accordion doors between the line dancers and the canasta players, which the canasta players don't like because they like to watch the line dancing, and they often re-open the doors.
I am taking very seriously Ace's suggestion about directing on bridge cruises in exchange for room and board, and when SteelersFan retires, I will move it way up on the priorities list.
