Computer malfunction wipes out grades at four Evansville schools

Posted: April 1, 2008 03:42 PM CDT

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) - A computer malfunction wiped out a month's worth of grades at four Evansville public schools, offering hope to struggling students but creating dismay among others.

The Evansville-Vanderburgh School Corporation announced on its Web site that a server malfunction during spring break had erased individual assignment grades at schools using six-week grading periods. Those schools are Harrison, North and Bosse high schools and Harwood Middle School.

Because of the snafu, upcoming report cards will not be issued at those schools. The final two weeks of the current six-week period will be combined with the final six weeks into an eight- week reporting period.

Just wondering if your school was one of those dealing with this issue.

Can't believe this made the national news.

Yes, I am one of those dealing with this incredible incompetence.

A year and a half go, the system which stores our grades crashed, losing about a week's worth of grades that we teachers then had to re-enter. I asked (again) at that time for the opportunity to do electronic backups of our data files. TPTB refused, saying that important measures were being taken to ensure that, even with the worst possible crash, we would never again lose more than 24 hours worth of data.

Two weeks ago, we got an email saying that the system was going to be upgraded over Spring Break, and that we would not be able to enter grades for the last three or four days of that time period. Sunday night we got an email saying that, due to "an unfortunate and very rare combination of hardware problems and backup configuration settings," all grade data entered from Jan. 31 to Mar. 28 was gone and unrecoverable.

I leave the wonderment at this incredible stupidity to your imagination.

Any chance TPTB learned anything from this? I sure hope so.

I am sure that they are paying you overtime to compensate you for the lost time, right?

Oh, most definitely. And I'm positive that if an individual teacher lost his/her gradebook, and told the principal that they didn't have any of that data, that said principal would be very forgiving and understanding.

Not.

Not very likely - they should have learned from the first loss but didn't.

Son1111 desperately wishes they would upgrade his school's system and lose his grades.

Maddie's science teacher doesn't trust the computer grading system and keeps his grades manually in a gradebook, then updates them every three weeks.
