My old computer died earlier this summer, and I had to replace it after nearly 8 years of use. I got an iMac, and I love it. I also have an iPad, so I'm having fun with Apple products.

Welcome back!
My desktop computer died last month. While I was able to use my laptop to continue logging in, I just picked up my new desktop yesterday. It's a Dell XPS 8700 with Windows 8.1, which will be a bit of a learning process. I've just started reinstalling all of my programs today and there are still a lot of files to restore from my external drive. At least I haven't lost anything important, I think.

Kazoo -- Welcome back!
Marley -- Please post a report on how it goes with 8.1. I swore I'd never get 8.0 after all my friends had fits with it.

So far so good. I got the
Windows 8 for Dummies book from the library and skimmed through that before getting started, so I wasn't too surprised by the new "Start" screen with its dumbed-down apps that start when I want the full-power versions on the Desktop, and I figured out where they hid the shut-down button under those silly new "Charms" gimmicks.

Just in time! I was afraid there'd be nobody to complain about the Christmas music in November this year...

You can create a desktop shortcut for "shutdown" by specifying as the target this:
C:\Windows\System32\shutdown.exe /s /t 00 /hybrid
and for "restart" this:
C:\Windows\System32\shutdown.exe /r /t 00

Welcome back!
Hey - some friends and I play trivia pretty regular at Bell's Sunday evenings. Care to join us some time?
