Dang it! Why didn't I ever bring a deer antler? But knowing a lot isn’t all it takes to be chosen for a game show, Miles said. “Personality is a big part of it,” he said, so he unreined his exuberance and tried to tell little stories related to his answers to questions.
“Maybe my background in teaching helps me. In class, I’m talking to students every day,” he said. “I’m pretty unflappable, I think.”
He also wore a piece of a deer antler hanging from leather around his neck, a gift from a First Nations youth when he accompanied a field trip with his students to Ontario and the Six Nations Reserve there. Show officials immediately seized on it and the related anecdote — the youth said it signified protection but Miles said he took it for luck — when he wore it to the Aug. 1 audition in Salt Lake City. When he was invited to the taping Labor Day weekend in Stamford, Conn., Miles said they told him, “Make sure you bring your deer antler!”
