Unless I'm missing something obviously profitable about dumping buckets of ice water, they are writing checks.

But apparently there's something a lot more viral about challenging someone to dump those icy buckets than simply asking them to write a check. Earlier this year, it was a polar bear plunge challenge, IIRC.

I understand the sentiment but I think the ALS organization would probably disagree.

Even though there are people doing the challenge and not writing a check (Very bad in my book) the amount of publicity this has generated is HUGE.

If you can think up something that goes viral in a scale this has to raise money and awerness for you cause, you are brilliant!

Daughter1111 said she saw one where there was a young man with ALS who was going to let friends pour ice water over his head but they did a swap out and poured a bucket of money insted. Awwww.

Okay, you're not on Evil Facebook, so you don't see all the people talking about it there. And you probably don't watch the talk shows and celebrity news shows on TV that have been promoting this, either.

How about visiting YouTube? Searching for "ice bucket challenge" turns up hundreds of thousands of matches.

Is this any different than wearing a pink ribbon or the NFL spending $250 per player for those awful hot pink shoes?

If you give, you give, but raising the awareness for the need to give is valuable itself.

OK... then put me in the Tennis Guy camp then. I'm always cynical of these awareness raising things because I judge people by their intent and not their actions. A lot of the gimmicky stuff is self-serving... just write a fucking check and quit bragging about it....

I remember in an old TV commercial for a compilation tape of the "best" of Rush Limbaugh's talk show, they had a skit where he pointed at his jacket that was filled with colored ribbons, and he uttered the only witty thing I ever heard him say.... "See this? THIS.... shows that I care more than you do."

Perfectly sums up how I feel about this kind of stuff....

I have heard a few of these "negative comments" in recent days. I only can give you my family's perspective, based on having my father and my wife's grandmother die of ALS.

We are huge supporters of the Ice Bucket Challenge. It has brought new attention and significantly new money to the fight. If people are spurred to learn more about ALS because of a bunch of people are dousing themselves with buckets of ice water, then I am happy, happy, happy to support. (I will say that those people who accept the challenge should not wimp out -- fill a cooler with ice and then water, and go for it. Take the pain and anguish so that someone's friend or family member will not in the future.)

I already support ALS research with my checkbook. This challenge gives me a chance to remember my Dad and smile, thinking about how he would have called me a fool for pouring ice water over my head, again and again. :)

lb says:

I am glad nobody told lb to look up the ice bucket thing via the board's search engine. Might have worked. Who knows. Not me, I'm not testing it. Would work now that its been brought up here.

And of course, since Pigladillo very much is lb's Pigladillo, I went looking at his avatar expecting to see Pigladillo taking the ice bucket challenge, or whatever. Not yet.

Locally, the newscasters have gotten involved, so you'd see them challenging each other, & following up with tapes of their ice water dunks, on news broadcasts.

Lately there's been a kid who got killed taking a bad dive or something into a pool (I should look it up); pool death had nothing to do with the ice bucket challenge, except that this kid was raising lots of money for ALS via the challenge because they have a friend with ALS. So now I guess the friend gets to feel worse than they'd already feel about their friend being dead. I wish the broadcasts were not linking the 2 things, but the ways news broadcasts work these days they are.

When I see a broadcast lead with "big fire", complete with big fire pictures, I have to keep watching to see if the fire is in my neighborhood (OK, if it was big enough I'd probably see it already) or in Iceland.

Well, you see, using the Bored's search engine is more effective when the subject is a matter of Bored culture, but this is very much a meme that has taken shape outside the Bored, so (aside from this thread) you'd need to search outside the Bored.
ghostjmf wrote:And of course, since Pigladillo very much is lb's Pigladillo, I went looking at his avatar expecting to see Pigladillo taking the ice bucket challenge, or whatever. Not yet.
But he has changed his avatar to Cares-A-Lot Squirrel, to fit his comments in the thread. And Bored culture evolves, so his reference to "my Pigladillo" is recognition that you've contributed to the Bored culture with a new Bored phrase.

Whether you choose to interpret this gesture as lighthearted and humorous or really mean and nasty is entirely up to you, of course.

For what it's worth, a friend of mine wrote this column about the ice bucket fad for the Washington Post. Her columns are usually intended to be humorous.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/com ... challenge/

The non-stop coverage of ice buckets being dumped on media personalities seems more motivated by self-promotion than curing ALS. I think we are near the tipping point and we have reached Peak Ice Bucket coverage, and the media will soon discover the next flash in the pan trend.

Interesting to see which celebrities other celebrities call out in their challenges. This post just showed up in my Facebook newsfeed from the group Gaelic Storm.
We nominate Justin Bieber, Kim Kardashian, Jimmy Buffett and the Coral Reefers, and Russell Crowe to take it on next to help raise awareness for ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease).
Somehow, I don't think Justin or Kim keep close tabs on what Gaelic Storm is doing!

Russell Crowe just might have one of his bodyguards doing so, ever since Gaelic Storm came out with their song The Night I Punched Russell Crowe.

BTW, I just looked to see what YouTube videos there were for that song. This one was irresistable!

Marley says, re lb referring to his not knowing what the ice bucket challenge was as "his Pigladillo":

Whether you choose to interpret this gesture as lighthearted and humorous or really mean and nasty is entirely up to you, of course.

When lb wants to be mean & nasty, including really mean & nasty, its not a matter of my interpretation. For instance, his harping on my not recognizing Pigladillo (I just hadn't read any threads in which Pigladillo appears before then) was pretty nasty. You could present those accompanying comments of his to a panel of uninvolved persons & I'd bet (though I'd also bet they'd chose to remain uninvolved) they'd say "pretty mean; why not just give an answer, a link, a reference?".

And his going on to claim that I hadn't consulted his blog, when in fact I had (he hadn't presented any Pigladillo-specific links, remember), because his snooping software is, he says, infallible, was just beyond the pale. To me, but probably also to that uninvolved panel.

As for searching for board culture stuff via board search; the thing is, I didn't know it was a board culture thing. I'm not going to assume everything referred to is board culture stuff, so google still seems to be the best 1st bet to me. Despite its insistence that I really need recipes instead. (It doesn't know that I have 20 lbs to go before I hit my ideal weight, after which I will I guess have to assume that weight loss doesn't always cure diabetes, unless in my case 20 fewer lbs is the magic # & it does!. See, even google, with its far-superior-to-lb's-spy-software, doesn't know everything. Yet. Unless it does. And just doesn't care.)

Now, I need to weight 20 lbs less, or fewer if you follow the supermarket checkout message grammar rules*, not 20 lb13s less (or fewer, etc).

For lb13, just one less (or fewer) saying anything anywhere about me would be just fine.

Which leads me to wonder about those other 12 lb(13-1?)s.

*supermarket grammar rules:

I dunno about where you live, but where I live the grammar police got all upset about signs in grocery checkout aisles that said "10 items or less". They insist they should read, to be grammatical "10 items or fewer". Meaning "fewer than 10 items", but that would take too many letters. They are right, technically, but it's a grocery checkout aisle, who cares? And now they've got me confused on where to use "less" & where to use "fewer" when I'm not in the grocery checkout aisle.

And on that other subject, I notice he's now signing things "lb13", but he didn't used to, I don't think. (That's another for the grammar police, "use to", "used to", but let's not go there.) Its formally littlebeast13. Are there really 12 others on the board named "littlebeast". aaargh.
