August Lyrically Speaking, Day 4 Theme Thursday
Twelve songs with a common theme of some kind to unite them. Identify the title and artist for one point each, then correctly identify the unifying theme for an additional 5 points. 2 point krox bonus for giving me another example of a song and artist which fits the theme.

1. I can't for the life of me
Remember a sadder day
I know they say let it be
But it just don't work out that way
And the course of a lifetime runs
Over and over again

2. I never got a chance to see him
Never heard nothin' but bad things about him
Momma I'm depending on you, to tell me the truth
Momma just hung her head and said, son

3. Babe, you know
You're growing up so fast
And mama's worrying
That you won't last
To say, let's play

4. There he stood in the night
Knowing what's wrong and what's right
He took her home to meet his mama and papa
Man, they had a terrible fight

5. Satan should be her name
To me they're bout the same
Every time I open my mouth
She steps in, tries to put me out
How could she stoop so low

6. She'd say, “Billy don't you run so fast,
Might fall on a piece of glass,
Might be snakes there in that grass,”

7. The one that she’s been saving
The one that she’s been saving
The one that she’s been saving
To make a feather Bed.

8. Live a little, be a gypsy, get around,
Get your feet up off the ground,
Live a little, get around.
Hands across the water, heads across the sky,
Hands across the water, heads across the sky.

9. Because we're children of Adam and Eve
I got a girl and she wants a lot of love
That's the kind of trouble I need plenty of
We'll kiss all night
I'll squeeze her tight

10. They say time is a healer
And now my wounds are not the same
I rang the bell with my heart in my mouth
I had to hear what he'd say
He sat me down to talk to me
He looked me straight in the eyes
He said:

11. I know a girl
She puts the color inside of my world
But she's just like a maze
Where all of the walls all continually change
And I've done all I can
To stand on her steps with my heart in my hands
Now I'm starting to see
Maybe it's got nothing to do with me

12. Did lovers really fall in love to stay
Stand beside each other come what may
was a promise really something people kept,
Not just something they would say
Did families really bow their heads to pray
Did daddies really never go away

KROX: OK, I've got three. Apparently I love a lot of songs that fit this bill. First two are from my two favorite Iowa singer-songwriters

1. One won't eat anything much
I guess she lives on air and sun and noodles
One's beginnin' to learn that the milk is over there
Inside of that shirt beneath the blue eyes of the woman I love

I've been sowing seeds from Mexico to Tennessee
And I'm reaping now an awful lot of woe

August Lyrically Speaking, Day 4 Theme Thursday
Twelve songs with a common theme of some kind to unite them. Identify the title and artist for one point each, then correctly identify the unifying theme for an additional 5 points. 2 point krox bonus for giving me another example of a song and artist which fits the theme.

1. I can't for the life of me
Remember a sadder day
I know they say let it be
But it just don't work out that way
And the course of a lifetime runs
Over and over again

2. I never got a chance to see him
Never heard nothin' but bad things about him
Momma I'm depending on you, to tell me the truth
Momma just hung her head and said, son

3. Babe, you know
You're growing up so fast
And mama's worrying
That you won't last
To say, let's play

"Sister Christian" - Night Ranger

4. There he stood in the night
Knowing what's wrong and what's right
He took her home to meet his mama and papa
Man, they had a terrible fight

5. Satan should be her name
To me they're bout the same
Every time I open my mouth
She steps in, tries to put me out
How could she stoop so low

6. She'd say, “Billy don't you run so fast,
Might fall on a piece of glass,
Might be snakes there in that grass,”

7. The one that she’s been saving
The one that she’s been saving
The one that she’s been saving
To make a feather Bed.

8. Live a little, be a gypsy, get around,
Get your feet up off the ground,
Live a little, get around.
Hands across the water, heads across the sky,
Hands across the water, heads across the sky.

9. Because we're children of Adam and Eve
I got a girl and she wants a lot of love
That's the kind of trouble I need plenty of
We'll kiss all night
I'll squeeze her tight

Theme?

Hmmm...hard to figure out with only one song so might as well just throw out a WAG. How about songs that have nothing to do with violence but that have nonetheless been linked to it by their use in violent scenes in movies. If you don't know what I mean, watch "Boogie Nights".

I read a review of the album when it came out, and it intrigued me so much that I bought it without hearing a note. The only song I had ever heard by them (well, him I guess, as it's somewhat a one-man operation) was Novocaine For The Soul, which I liked, but never pursued anything else beyond that. I liked the cd so much that I went back and got the whole catalogue. Everett is a unique artist indeed, with a fascinating if tragic backstory.

The lyrics to one of his early, pre-Eels songs, You'll Be The Scarecrow, touch me deeply.
