August Lyrically Speaking Day 3 – Road Music Wednesday

Day 2 Will remain open until around noon central again.

In the last few years, I have found myself on the road for long trips in my car for one reason or another. I love to make playlists for these trips and burn CDs to play in the car. Sometimes I have travel companions, sometimes not. But either way, it’s fun to have something to sing along with when I start to get road hypnosis. Today’s collection is the most recent, coming from our trip to St. Louis on the first leg of our Hawaii anniversary trip. Since Wendy was going to be in the car, too, I made sure to include plenty of songs that she would enjoy. I’ve included a few more songs than usual, since our tastes are pretty eclectic, meaning there may be songs on here you don’t know. I did do you the favor of leaving out the obscure show tunes from productions I've done or seen in the past. So no themes or bonuses here, just one point for each song and title, for a total of 30 points available.

1. You've been havin' real bad dreams, oh, oh
You used to lie so close to me, oh, oh
There's nothing more than empty sheets
Between our love, our love
Oh, our love, our love

2. I overheard a conservation your name was mentioned in
But they didn't talk about us, only her again
I didn't want to listen but I hung on every word
They said some things I wish I hadn't heard

3. Well you're soft as glass
And I'm a gentleman
We got the sky to talk about
And the world to lie upon
Days up and down they come
Like rain on a conga drum
Forget most, remember some
Don't turn none away

4. I'll sacrifice tomorrow just to have you here today
Forever, seems so far away
This time full of ample play
You dream about today
Belief slips away
The wings of love they come away and

5. So slide over here
And give me a moment
Your moves are so raw
I've got to let you know
I've got to let you know
You're one of my kind

6. She's got big brown eyes and long black wavy hair
She's got big brown eyes and long black wavy hair
She's so beautiful, people, it don't seem fair

Well, I've been to Chicago, been to New Orleans
Yes, I've been to Chicago, been to New Orleans
But I'd rather see my baby, workin' in her old blue jeans

7. Now I've tried to talk to you and make you understand
All you have to do is close your eyes
And just reach out your hands and touch me
Hold me close don't ever let me go

8. Settle down, it'll all be clear
Don't pay no mind to the demons
They fill you with fear
The trouble it might drag you down
If you get lost, you can always be found

9. In this world we're just beginning
To understand the miracle of living
Baby I was afraid before
But I'm not afraid anymore

10. Ooo, your kisses
Sweeter than honey
And guess what?
So is my money
All I want you to do for me
Is give it to me when you get home
Yeah baby

11. Kissing like a bandit stealing time
Underneath the sycamore tree
Cupid by the hour sends valentines
To my sweet lover and me

12. I thought it would be so simple,
Like a thousand times before.
I'd take what I wanted and just walk away.
But I never made it to the door.
Now, babe I'm not begging for mercy.
Go ahead and throw the book at me.

13. Baby's gone all alone
Are you sad because you're on your own?
Get back up, party down
There's so many good ones still around
Whatcha gonna do? Whatcha gonna feel?
I don't know

14. Go out and smash it
Like Oh My God
Jump off that sofa
Let's get get OFF

15. When she's lying close beside me
And my heart beats with the rhythm of her sighs
This time the girl is gonna stay
This time the girl is gonna stay
For more than just a day

More stuff I didn't know until recently, this one thanks to some radio DJ (road trip!) doing a bit about Otis Redding. He had the original hit, but it was nothing compared to what Aretha did with it two years later. Since she had the mega hit, I never heard the Redding version until that show.

Just Give Me a Reason - P!nk

2. I overheard a conservation your name was mentioned in
But they didn't talk about us, only her again
I didn't want to listen but I hung on every word
They said some things I wish I hadn't heard

Nope

3. Well you're soft as glass
And I'm a gentleman
We got the sky to talk about
And the world to lie upon
Days up and down they come
Like rain on a conga drum
Forget most, remember some
Don't turn none away

To Live Is to Fly - Townes Van Zandt

4. I'll sacrifice tomorrow just to have you here today
Forever, seems so far away
This time full of ample play
You dream about today
Belief slips away
The wings of love they come away and

Nope

5. So slide over here
And give me a moment
Your moves are so raw
I've got to let you know
I've got to let you know
You're one of my kind

Need You Tonight - INXS

Nope

7. Now I've tried to talk to you and make you understand
All you have to do is close your eyes
And just reach out your hands and touch me
Hold me close don't ever let me go

Nope

8. Settle down, it'll all be clear
Don't pay no mind to the demons
They fill you with fear
The trouble it might drag you down
If you get lost, you can always be found

Home - Phillip Phillips

9. In this world we're just beginning
To understand the miracle of living
Baby I was afraid before
But I'm not afraid anymore

Heaven Is a Place on Earth - Belinda Carlisle

10. Ooo, your kisses
Sweeter than honey
And guess what?
So is my money
All I want you to do for me
Is give it to me when you get home
Yeah baby

Respect - Aretha Franklin

11. Kissing like a bandit stealing time
Underneath the sycamore tree
Cupid by the hour sends valentines
To my sweet lover and me

Wishing Well - TTD (For me, this would have been a GREAT one for "reminds me of a place" Monday)

12. I thought it would be so simple,
Like a thousand times before.
I'd take what I wanted and just walk away.
But I never made it to the door.
Now, babe I'm not begging for mercy.
Go ahead and throw the book at me.

Nope

13. Baby's gone all alone
Are you sad because you're on your own?
Get back up, party down
There's so many good ones still around
Whatcha gonna do? Whatcha gonna feel?
I don't know

C'Est La Vie - Robbie Nevil

14. Go out and smash it
Like Oh My God
Jump off that sofa
Let's get get OFF

I Gotta Feeling - BEP

15. When she's lying close beside me
And my heart beats with the rhythm of her sighs
This time the girl is gonna stay
This time the girl is gonna stay
For more than just a day

Nope

9. Heaven is a Place on Earth - Belinda Carlisle
10. RESPECT - Arthea
11. Wishing Well - Terence Trent D'Arby (which was under consideration for my "song that reminds you of a person" the other day. Pink Cadillac beat it out but not by much.

August Lyrically Speaking Day 3 – Road Music Wednesday
In the last few years, I have found myself on the road for long trips in my car for one reason or another. I love to make playlists for these trips and burn CDs to play in the car. Sometimes I have travel companions, sometimes not. But either way, it’s fun to have something to sing along with when I start to get road hypnosis. Today’s collection is the most recent, coming from our trip to and from St. So no themes or bonuses here, just one point for each song and title, for a total of 30 points available.

1. You've been havin' real bad dreams, oh, oh
You used to lie so close to me, oh, oh
There's nothing more than empty sheets
Between our love, our love
Oh, our love, our love Just give me a reason – Pink feat. Nate Ruess. Wendy and I both love this song.

2. I overheard a conservation your name was mentioned in
But they didn't talk about us, only her again
I didn't want to listen but I hung on every word
They said some things I wish I hadn't heard Rumor Has it – Reba McIntyre. I like some old school twangy country now and again. Wendy tolerates it.

3. Well you're soft as glass
And I'm a gentleman
We got the sky to talk about
And the world to lie upon
Days up and down they come
Like rain on a conga drum
Forget most, remember some
Don't turn none away To Live is to Fly – Townes Van Zandt. Yeah. Wendy wrinkled up her nose and said, “What is this?” I used the Steve Earle version, so it was easier to explain, since she had gone with me to his concert a few months earlier.

4. I'll sacrifice tomorrow just to have you here today
Forever, seems so far away
This time full of ample play
You dream about today
Belief slips away
The wings of love they come away and Seasons Change – Expose. One of Wendy’s favorites from BITD

5. So slide over here
And give me a moment
Your moves are so raw
I've got to let you know
I've got to let you know
You're one of my kind Need You Tonight – INXS. Ditto, although I like this one, too.

6. She's got big brown eyes and long black wavy hair
She's got big brown eyes and long black wavy hair
She's so beautiful, people, it don't seem fair

Well, I've been to Chicago, been to New Orleans
Yes, I've been to Chicago, been to New Orleans
But I'd rather see my baby, workin' in her old blue jeans Three Corn Patches – Elvis Presley. Wendy can tell if someone’s a true Elvis fan or not by asking about this song. She loves it, but it’s a little obscure – only shows up on one or two of the seems like thousands of Elvis CDs that have been issued and reissued recently.

7. Now I've tried to talk to you and make you understand
All you have to do is close your eyes
And just reach out your hands and touch me
Hold me close don't ever let me go More than Words – Extreme. One of my favorite songs from that decade. Close harmony on a rock song? Love it.

8. Settle down, it'll all be clear
Don't pay no mind to the demons
They fill you with fear
The trouble it might drag you down
If you get lost, you can always be found Home – Philip Phillips. Although we had quit watching AI by the time he won, we both like this song and one other of his, which will be coming up soon.

9. In this world we're just beginning
To understand the miracle of living
Baby I was afraid before
But I'm not afraid anymore Heaven is a Place on Earth – Belinda Carlisle. It was about the time this song came on that Wendy asked if I had made a CD entirely for her. Let’s just say that this song would not have been on any mix CD that I would have made for myself.

10. Ooo, your kisses
Sweeter than honey
And guess what?
So is my money
All I want you to do for me
Is give it to me when you get home
Yeah baby Respect – Aretha Franklin. Who doesn’t like this song, especially for road music?

11. Kissing like a bandit stealing time
Underneath the sycamore tree
Cupid by the hour sends valentines
To my sweet lover and me Wishing Well – Terence Trent D’Arby. Really enjoyed this whole record. Wish he hadn’t done the whole Cat Stevens thing.

12. I thought it would be so simple,
Like a thousand times before.
I'd take what I wanted and just walk away.
But I never made it to the door.
Now, babe I'm not begging for mercy.
Go ahead and throw the book at me. Love in the First Degree – Alabama. Brad Paisley’s song “Old Alabama had prompted Wendy to say recently that we should get some of those old Alabama songs, so I included a bunch of them on the music for this trip.

13. Baby's gone all alone
Are you sad because you're on your own?
Get back up, party down
There's so many good ones still around
Whatcha gonna do? Whatcha gonna feel?
I don't know C’est La Vie – Robbie Nevil. A favorite of both of ours.

14. Go out and smash it
Like Oh My God
Jump off that sofa
Let's get get OFF I Gotta Feeling – Black Eyed Peas. Driving music, pure and simple.

15. When she's lying close beside me
And my heart beats with the rhythm of her sighs
This time the girl is gonna stay
This time the girl is gonna stay
For more than just a day I Just Can’t Help Believing – BJ Thomas or Elvis. In Wendy’s top ten of the Elvis catalogue. I prefer the BJ Thomas version actually.
