elwing and I went to Derby Dinner Playhouse last night to celebrate my birthday. It's a local "dinner and a show" place and they were performing "Mary Poppins". Although the basic story is the same, it is quite different than the movie version. Of course it's hard to have dancing penguins, carousel horses, tea parties on the ceiling and fireworks from Admiral Boom, so they had to change the setting for some of the songs (and two of my favorite parts were omitted: "a wooden leg named Smith" and "rendering it undrinkable, even for Americans"). There was also a lot more emphasis on the parents - in fact I said to elwing that this production might be better called "Saving Mr. Banks" since his redemption is pretty much front and center. We got the tickets bidding in a silent auction at a trivia event we attended several months ago and when we found out that my birthday would coincide with the production, we jumped at the chance.
