I just saw this article about how employers say they cannot fill some jobs because of a lack of applicants who have the skills, which of course is an enormous crock of bovine excrement. Some of the comments after the article give a better picture of what is going on.

I think a lot of that is BS to get Congress to raise the number of H1B visas.

In my areas of expertise H1Bs can't help as there're a lot of open jobs in my areas as well.

However a lot is low pay. The bank where I did a six-month contract before my current job posted ads for someone with experience with just one of the two skills I am an expert in. I didn't apply as it didn't pay enough and I didn't want to work anymore with the guy I'd be replacing since he's retiring next spring.

The job I did before that has had a posting for over four months and just recently they put up a contract job posting for the same thing. I don't know how much the permanent job could pay but the contract lists the rate as $41 to $45 an hour. I was getting $80 an hour.

The biggest problem is that universities aren't teaching the subjects that companies want. The companies also aren't willing to hire someone and then pay for their desired training themselves as they have seen people who they've trained jump ship once they have the knowledge other companies need.

Java programmers are a dime a dozen as universities seem to be teaching that but nothing else in the programming area.

It all comes down to money in the end.

Wow, we agree on something.

Universities are teaching cool stuff. Not real stuff. But its not necessarily their fault. College students want the skills to become an overnight billionaire but they aren't willing to learn and develop the skills those that will become billionaires need their employees to have. Everybody wants to graduate as a chief. Plus the work ethic of today's college grads sucks. Probably because they think they should be chiefs and are asked to be braves.

I don't agree that everyone wants to be a chief but no one wants to be a team player.

I taught myself the cool stuff at UCLA and it's done me pretty good (well except for SNOBOL which was the coolest).

Nowadays everyone wants to be a game designer.

You don't have to be a college grad to have this same attitude... I've seen it a LOT in the newbies who've been coming our way at Mecca the last few years. They don't want to work hard, nor do they expect to work hard. They DO expect to get paid, and whine that it's never enough for their mediocre effort. They have an underlying dislike for the experienced people because we are the people they do not want to be, and they certainly want no part of the knowledge of our experience because even before we hired them off the street they already knew everything they needed to know about their job. They have absolutely zero concept of what teamwork is outside of a multiplayer video game.

Somewhere, we went wrong with this generation, and I don't think it's going to get better anytime soon....

The army taught me COBOL and IBM360 assembler for my National Guard stint. Then when I did my summer duty at Ft. Hood I would work with the regular army guys. I'm pretty sure we did some SNOBOL stuff. I remember them asking me if I knew COBOL and I said 'sure'. Then they gave me some code that looked nothing like COBOL. I'm pretty sure it was SNOBOL. Fortunately I only had to modify some headers and other constants and very little logic.

I used to work with SNOBOL, but then we discontinued selling it about 10 years ago....
