Next week we are going to Yellowstone. Never been-expecting not a lot of enjoyment because of the crowds-but it is what it is.

Planned Highlights
1)The Trapper's Kettle in Belfield, North Dakota. In 2008-they had really good buffalo burgers-so me and Littlest Spock are looking forward to this.

2)Little Bighorn battlefield-was there with the Mrs. in 1995-but will be good.

3) Absaroka-Beartooth highway.

4) Various Yellowstone/Big Teats(Grand Teton) stuff for a couple of days. Hey, I didn't name it-A lonely French trapper did.

5) Craters of the Moon in Idaho

6) Catch the corners of Oregon/Washington-Me, Mrs S and Li'l Spock will then have all of the lower 48.

7) Lolo Pass road to Missoula. Various Lewis/Clark stuff.

Glacier Park to drive the "Going to the Sun" road

9) Drive the Highline (US 2) across Montana and ND-We will hit oil boom country again-or as me and the Spocklette call it to the annoyance of everyone else in the family-"Our old stomping grounds." We figutr that a 3-day bus trip qualifies us as old oilfield hands-LOL.

Spock, when you stop to see Old Faithful, take a minute to go inside the Old Faithful Inn and admire the multi-story log-cabin lobby. I only got to spend one night at the inn, but I wouldn't mind being snowed in there for a winter.

Ah, the Hi-Line. I spent a lot of time travelling it the year I lived in Montana, mostly to go the 100 miles to the nearest K-Mart in Havre, and to hang out with friends at the bowling alley in Harlem.

When I was 10 my uncle got a job working at Yellowstone in the Old Faithful Inn. He and my aunt offered to take my brother and me for the summer and my mother jumped at the chance. We didn't get to stay at the inn - we had a cabin in the Old Faithful area - but I spent a fair amount of time there as well as gadding about the area.

I have pretty much memorized that one. LOL-I have limited myself to one book on the trip(I will prolly buy more) and I think I will bring "A Life Wild and Perilous" about the Mountain Men. Fits the territory and all. I am in a major Africana reading mode now (and for the rest of my life) but I want to fit the territory.

Just finished Philbrick's "The Last Stand" as a refresher for the battle-Couldn't get any other takers in the family, though.

REVENGE IS MINE as in the immortal words of George MacDonald Fraser, I will be "God's Own History Bore" at the battlefield and on the way there. ie "This must be where Crazy Horse cut through Keogh's Right Wing" etc etc and I will have hours(and days) in the car to enlighten them about the controversy of whether Custer actually reached the river-Bwa-ha-ha!!!

For some reason-Mrs. S is not as excited about driving the Hi-Line as I am. I would like to stop at "The Museum of the Plains Indian(or some such) in Browning.

I was teaching the Spocklette today about what "Stomping Grounds' means and how we are going to apply that to the oil fields.

For a history buff who is a visualizer, it is a dream. This site is a pretty good introduction. Since it is so close to St. Louis, it gives you something to do if you ever decide to visit the STL. The Mississipians may not have been warlike enough for you, but the engineering there is pretty amazing.

For a history buff who is a visualizer, it is a dream. This site is a pretty good introduction. Since it is so close to St. Louis, it gives you something to do if you ever decide to visit the STL. The Mississipians may not have been warlike enough for you, but the engineering there is pretty amazing.

Thanks, I was thinking about it a little bit and the huge interest I have in Indian stuff is so focused on the Plains that I have sadly neglected other areas. It is not just the "Warlike" stuff-It is that, but I think it might be more buffalo and geography and environment driven-I just love the High Plains.

Quick highlights from a hotel in Missoula.

1) Cheyenne sales girl at Little Bighorn liked my book purchases-one dealt with the Cheyenne related wars in the Denver area. She said everybody always forgets about those Cheyennes.

2)Saw 2 grizzlies in Yellowstone. One was eating a dead bison. I had hoped (but not expected ) to see grizzlies and moose. Hit the trifecta on moose-with a bull and later a cow and calf. Although seeing such animals in a crowd of people leaves something to be desired-but "It is what it is."

3) Saw stupid tourist behavior in that they approached a bull elk and a buffalo way too close.

4) Mrs. S was not real gung-ho on Grand Teton. She was glad we went after we did. It is the view that launched countless multi-million dollar homes-what more can be said.

5) Personally, I really liked the Hell's Canyon area. Much prettier than I expected.

6) Today was maybe the best day of the trip. Short day from Walla Walla, Washington to Missoula. The steep slopes that they drive farm equipment on in the Palouse Hills are absolutely incredible. Dipped our feet in the Lochsa (I think) River and picked huckleberries near the Lolo Pass.

7) Started a new career as a traffic cop in Montana. An oncoming motorcyclist wiped out just in front of us. We saw him rolling (I thought it was loose cargo at first). The vehicle just in front of us took off and we stopped and tried to call 911. No signal so we took off down the mountain until we could get signal-then headed back to the scene. I stopped short of the accident and signaled oncoming traffic to slow down until things cleared up. Mrs. S gave a statement. It turned out to be minor injuries. Good lesson for the kids(and me) about how fast things can happen. A few seconds further down the road-I would have hit him and I could have done nothing about it.
