SSS Gives a Thumbs Up

Mrs. SSS and I went to see Life Itself, the documentary about Roger Ebert, and it is a wonderful movie (I would be very surprised if it didn't win the Best Documentary Oscar). There's a lot about Ebert's life most people didn't know, such as the way he reached out to unknown filmmakers over the years and how Martin Scorsese credited Ebert for helping turn his career around when he was in a career funk in the 1980s with lots of personal problems. Most of all, the feeling you get from the movie is Ebert's love of life and the movies and how he imparted that to others. There's also a number of outtakes of scenes with him and Gene Siskel and a lot about their friendship and rivalry (Siskel never told Ebert he was dying, which hurt Ebert tremendously)
There's some fairly harrowing footage of Ebert during his last hospital stay when he was in obvious pain (especially when he tried to walk), but he managed to stay upbeat and kept working almost until the very end.
This is definitely a documentary worth seeing.
