Magnum PI and Higgins and Dr. Who
My teenage years corresponded (roughly) with Magnum PI. I was not a big TV watcher then, but I saw a few episodes. Obviously, my favorite part was Higgins (the butler) with his British Empire experience and so forth. I know he fought in the Mau Mau (Kenya).
I just looked at Netflix and they have it watch instantly-I may have to start watching the series,-solely for Higgins, you understand, not for the eye candy.
My kids are big into Dr. Who-so I am into Season 2 (recent run) on that series-Kids are on season 7 or so.
Haven't watched an episode for several months

I am going through Breaking Bad now. Let me recommend Lillyhammer

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

Has anyone watched Ray Donovan on Showtime? Is it worth making the effort to catch up on season 1? --Bob

Re: Magnum PI and Higgins and Dr. Who
Through the winter I watched "The Americans" Season 1-Can't wait for Season 2.
Have watched "Homeland" Seasons 1 and 2. Not sure if 3 is available.
Plus "House of Cards" 1 and 2.
These were watched in pretty close conjunction-Got a little hard to keep them straight in my head.

Re: Magnum PI and Higgins and Dr. Who
My twin sister (SwampyTurtles) was on an episode of Magnum. I will have to look up the episode name.
But if you see an episode where a deaf woman witnesses a bank robbery, that is the one.
She is on briefly but Magnum says her name. The deaf woman is brought to police headquarters and needs to look at potential suspects. Magnum says to the female police officer (SwampyTurtles) 'Debbie, take this woman to the line up room' and she mutely does. Debbie is her real name so that was fun.
I had a viewing party with leis and maitais. It was fun.
She said he was awesome to everyone. Very friendly and not in anyway a 'star' personality.
I will have to go look for the show since we have NetFlix.
And she thought he was also very attractive in person.

Re: Magnum PI and Higgins and Dr. Who
It's interesting that John Hillerman, who played Higgins and a lot of similar roles over the years, is actually from Texas. It's an interesting counterpoint to the host of British actors who are now playing American characters (including the relative newcomer who is playing Louis Zamperini). Hillerman is a cousin of the Western-set mystery writer Tony Hillerman.Spock wrote:My teenage years corresponded (roughly) with Magnum PI. I was not a big TV watcher then, but I saw a few episodes. Mrs. SSS and I have been watching Orange is the New Black from Netflix (we finished the second season of House of Cards a couple of weeks ago).

Watched Episode 1 and 2 of Season 1-A paired show.
It felt a little "John Miliusy"(Thats a good thing).
Some Higginsy goodness-though I did not like when he (as a former commando instructor during the War) was ineffectual against the bad guy. But I suspect that will be a theme throughout.
The bad guy was a French indochinese settler type-so I like that storyline.

Re: Magnum PI and Higgins and Dr. Who
I watched a couple of Magnums because the folkses where I worked were raving about it, mostly the women, but the men liked it too. The last one I watched, Magnum is trapped in something or other, and he can't possibly escape. But in the last scene, he comes walking into the picture, having escaped.
Years later, I read Misery, and boy did I appreciate this: The bad guy stuck him in a car on a mountain road and knocked him out and welded the door shut and tore out the brakes and started him to his death, and he woke up and tried to steer and tried to get out but the car went off a cliff before he could escape! And it crashed and burned and I was so upset and excited, and the next week, you better believe I was first in line. And they always start with the end of the last week. And there was Rocketman, trying to get out, and here comes the cliff, and just before the car went off the cliff, he jumped free! And all the kids cheered! But I didn't cheer. I stood right up and started shouting. This isn't what happened last week! Have you all got amnesia? They just cheated us! This isn't fair! HE DIDN'T GET OUT OF THE COCK - A - DOODIE CAR!
I hasten to add that I am not anybody's #1 fan, nor did I chop anybody's foot off. Ever.

Seriously, I did watch the part of the episode pertaining(it comes early) and I still have only watched the first 2 episodes of Magnum.
Kind of a dark, mysterious woman-your sister.

Re: Magnum PI and Higgins and Dr. Who
Despite lasting 8 reasonably enjoyable seasons the best for me will always be the season 3 opening two part episode called "Did You See the Sunrise".
I will have to check out episode 3 from season 7 again!

Re: Magnum PI and Higgins and Dr. Who
My 16 year old watches a lot of shows on Netflix. He has done "Friday Night Lights", Then "Everybody Loves Raymond", Then "Cheers". I think he is on his (at least) 2nd time through all those shows.
He loves "Castle"-so I am trying to get him to watch Magnum. I think he would enjoy that.
