Take Me Out To The Ballgame - Championship Game!

#1 Post by littlebeast13 » Wed Oct 24, 2007 6:52 am

Just in time for the start of the real World Series (Just as was suggested to me when I introduced my new TMOTTBG format back in March), here is the much awaited championship game between the top seed and defending champion MACRAE, and the #2 seed appearing in her first championship game, melly.

Good luck to both, and of course, anyone who wishes to may play this game JFF....

Name That Year!

For each of the following events in Major League history, give the year it occured in. 2 runs for nailing the year on the nose, 1 run for coming within 2 years either way:

16. Don Larsen pitches a perfect game in the World Series

17. Pedro Martinez loses a perfect game by allowing a base hit to Bip Roberts in the 10th inning

18. Houston plays its first season as the Astros, changing their name from the Colt .45's

19. The players go on strike for the first time, cancelling games over the first week and a half of the season

20. The New York Yankees select the great bust Brien Taylor with the #1 overall pick in the draft

Career Paths

We haven't done this in a while. Below are all of the Major League teams a player has played for, in the order he played for them, with the year of his ML debut in parentheses. Name each player for 2 run each:

21. Los Angeles Dodgers, Florida Marlins, New York Mets, San Diego Padres, Oakland A's (1992)

22. Kansas City Royals, New York Mets, Toronto Blue Jays, Kansas City Royals, Toronto Blue Jays, New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, New York Mets (1986)

23. California Angels, Milwaukee Brewers, Colorado Rockies, Cincinnati Reds, Boston Red Sox (1988)

24. Detroit Tigers, New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, St. Louis Cardinals, Seattle Mariners (1999)

25. New York Yankees, Milwaukee Brewers, Cleveland Indians, Atlanta Braves, Arizona Diamondbacks (1992)

Undesignated Hitters

26. Since 1997 when interleague play first began, there have been 12 American League pitchers who have hit a homerun in a regular season game. Name as many as you can (You can not name more than 12) for 1 run each.

Three Run Question Clearanec Aisle

The following questions are worth.... well, duh!:

27. The Colorado Rockies are trying to make MLB's expansion class of 1993 the first such expansion class in which more than 1 of the teams has won a World Series. All 6 expansion classes currently have exactly one team with a World Championship... which year's class was the last one to finally get a World Series title?

28. What pitcher did Hank Aaron hit his 755th career homerun off of? (Name the pitcher Bonds hit #755 off of for 2 bonus runs)

29. History was made at Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati on June 30, 2005, where thanks to a new rule implemented prior to the 2007 season, that game between the Reds and Astros became the last regular season game in Major League history in which this happened.

30. This player recorded the last putout in the final game at the first Busch Stadium (also known as Sportsmans Park) in St. Louis on May 8, 1966. Four days later, he recorded the first putout at the second Busch Stadium in the first game there. Not all that amazing? He accomplished the former while playing for the visiting team, and the latter as a member of the Cardinals!

31. What is the only team to win three postseason series in the same season, with the clinching games all coming in the visiting team's ballpark?

The Grand Slam Question

The following question is worth 4 runs:

32. On April 19, 2004, what pitcher hurled seven perfect innings of relief in a game his team lost 10-4?

A. Jake Westbrook
B. Carlos Silva
C. Joaquin Benoit
D. Rodrigo Lopez

Extra Inning Tiebreaker

The following question will be used to break any ties in individual games by awarding the win to whoever is the closest to the actual number:

33. According to Baseball Reference, the legendary Craig Paquette's closest comparable player is former Red Sox manager Butch Hobson. How many wins did Hobson get as manager for the Red Sox?

Sultan of SWAG Question

The following multiple choice question deals with some personal connection I have to baseball, and is here merely to add a bit of a luck factor to the game. It is worth 5 runs if you can guess it correctly:

If the Rockies win the World Series, it will not only mark the 8th different winner in the last 8 years, but will make the 7th time in those 8 years that I have seen the World Series winner play during that regular season. So the question is, who is the only World Series winner from 2000-2006 that I did not see play the year they won the Series?

A. Anaheim Angels
B. Florida Marlins
C. Boston Red Sox
D. Chicago White Sox

All the postseason drama, no annoying Tim McCarver......

Spoiler
Out of it of course with the worst score of last round, as if I ever had much chance against Macrae anyway! Even the JFF player had a better score than me! But I seemed to catch a team on a down week alot during the season so not really a surprise.

Mr. October

Name the following World Series heroes for 1 run each:

1. This Dodger hit the homerun that ended Game 1 of the 1988 World Series
Kirk Gibson
2. This Red Sox hit the homerun that ended Game 6 of the 1975 World Series
I dunno, only one I can think of is Carlton Fisk waving the Home run fair. Not sure if that was game 6.
3. This Blue Jay hit the homerun in Game 6 that ended the 1993 World Series
Joe Carter of Mitch "Wild Thing" Williams.
4. This Diamondback got the win in 3 of the 4 games Arizona won in the 2001 World Series
Randy Johnson
5. This Yankee turned the tide of the 1996 World Series with a clutch 3 run homer in the 8th inning of Game 4
Hard to forget that one. Jim Leyritz off Mark Wohlers. Wohlers never recovered, nor did the sorryassbraves, who blew a chance to go back to back.

Yeah, right. I have a vague notion that Josh Beckett did it. Other than that no idea.

Diamondbacks of the class of 1998?
28. What pitcher did Hank Aaron hit his 755th career homerun off of? (Name the pitcher Bonds hit #755 off of for 2 bonus runs)
Al Downing, Bacsik was 756 for Bonds. Don't know 755.
29. History was made at Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati on June 30, 2005, where thanks to a new rule implemented prior to the 2007 season, that game between the Reds and Astros became the last regular season game in Major League history in which this happened.
Something about the half inning was wiped out because the inning wasn't completed before an official game was called. Astros probably tied or got the lead but had it wiped out by rain.
30. This player recorded the last putout in the final game at the first Busch Stadium (also known as Sportsmans Park) in St. Louis on May 8, 1966. Four days later, he recorded the first putout at the second Busch Stadium in the first game there. Not all that amazing? Nope.
31. What is the only team to win three postseason series in the same season, with the clinching games all coming in the visiting team's ballpark?
Nope. Diamondbacks in 2001? Although seems like they won the World Series at home.

The Grand Slam Question
The following question is worth 4 runs:
32. On April 19, 2004, what pitcher hurled seven perfect innings of relief in a game his team lost 10-4?

D. Rodrigo Lopez

3 and a half.

- 1961 (The Angels won the World Series in 2002. The Mets ('62), Royals ('69), Blue Jays ('77), Marlins ('93) and Diamondbacks ('98) all won titles before that)

28. What pitcher did Hank Aaron hit his 755th career homerun off of? (Name the pitcher Bonds hit #755 off of for 2 bonus runs) - Dick Drago (There were a lot of stories on this as Bonds drew close). Bonds hit his 755th off of Clay Hensley

29. History was made at Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati on June 30, 2005, where thanks to a new rule implemented prior to the 2007 season, that game between the Reds and Astros became the last regular season game in Major League history in which this happened. - The game ended as an official tie (Games can no longer end in a tie and be replayed in its entirety at a later date... such games are now treated as suspended games, and are picked up from where they left off)

- Orlando Cepeda (Cepeda played first base for the Giants in the final game at Busch Stadium I. He was traded to the Cardinals the next day while they were in Chicago, and was playing first for the Cardinals when the played the first game at Busch Stadium II after the Chicago series. Since both of the plays in question were groundouts, Cepeda recorded both milestone putouts)

31. What is the only team to win three postseason series in the same season, with the clinching games all coming in the visiting team's ballpark? - White Sox (Who clinched on the road in Boston, Anaheim and Houston in 2005. Would you believe that despite having two teams for over a century, there has only been ONE postseason series EVER clinched by a Chicago team at home since the dawn of the World Series in 1903!!! That would be the 1906 Series, when both Chicago teams played each other and the White Sox won the series at their ballpark....)

The Grand Slam Question

The following question is worth 4 runs:

32. On April 19, 2004, what pitcher hurled seven perfect innings of relief in a game his team lost 10-4?

A. Jake Westbrook
B. Carlos Silva
C. Joaquin Benoit
D. Rodrigo Lopez

http://retrosheet.org/boxesetc/2004/B04190CLE2004.htm

Westbrook relieved Jeff D'Amico for the Indians, who allowed 4 runs to Detroit without recording an out in the first inning. After Westbrook retired 21 batters in a row, Eric Wedge brought in Rafael Betancourt and Scott Stewart, who got lit up for 6 more runs...

My Chicago trip I took in 2006 was supposed to happen in '05, but it wound up working out of the plans. Anyway, I saw the Angels play an interleague series here in '02 (The day after Jack Buck died), the Marlins in an ESPN game at the height of Dontrelle-mania in 2003, and saw the Red Sox in KC in June of 2004. If the trend is to continue, the Rockies are gonna have to get their heads out of their butts, though....

SCORES:

MACRAE 64
melly 44

(JFF - Tan 30)

MACRAE wins his second straight TMOTTBG title, doing so in convincing fashion over melly who survived a pair of 1 run wins to make it to the championship. Congrats to MAC, who without his longtime rival jeemie playing after April put on an even more dominating performance than usual this season.

Thanks to everyone who played this year, and to the playoff participants who had to endure the issues the Bored shutdown brought to the postseason. I'm never certain whether I'm going to bring the game back for another year or not, but if it is, I hope to see everyone back next Spring....

I'm not as up on my baseball trivia as I was then (And then not as good as I was in the 90's). I amaze myself with some of the facts I apparently knew when I posted these old games...
