The LA Kings won the Stanley Cup last night, beating the NY Rangers in five games.

The people of Los Angeles can now stop pretending to care about hockey and join the rest of the country in pretending to care about soccer.

At least I can watch the World Cup in the comfort of my living room instead of driving to DC to watch it on closed circuit feeds at DAR Constitution Hall (yes, I did that with the 1978 WC).

They sure seemed to care about it. That stadium lit up like fireworks when Martinez scored that final goal. Then they stayed for the hoisting of the Cup too.

I care more about football than I do about soccer, but I worry that for the next two generations, that won't be the case. More of them are playing soccer than ever thought of picking up a football.

If this were the case, we'd be World Cup crazy around here and have probably long ago had one of those professional soccer league teams. But we aren't and we haven't and we don't, because playing and spectating are two different things that require two different mindsets. I loved playing soccer as a kid, but find watching it boring as hell....
