The Ultimate QoD Challenge -- Week 7, Thursday

#1 Post by Pastor Fireball » Thu May 29, 2014 5:01 am

"Ten!"

Fortunately, George R.R. Martin will not be introducing today's round. He would just spend the next 36 hours talking about wieners while constantly claiming that the questions are coming soon.

"Does Anybody Read a Book That Isn't on a Kindle Anymore?"

It's all about books today. Actual books. Besides the Bible, of course, because we already had those dedicated questions a couple of weeks ago. Below are five pairs of characters (even numbers) and five pairs of places (odd numbers). For each, tell me the book that is most closely associated with them. 8 points for each correct answer. And don't forget that bet percentage on tomorrow's "Fat Chance" books question.

Answers are due by Friday 5/30 at 4 PM EDT.

1. Laputa and Brobdingnag
2. Ana Steele and Kate Kavanaugh
3. Russell Square and Miss Pinkerton's Academy for Young Ladies
4. Blackberry and Fiver
5. Bologna and Pianosa
6. Higgs and Chowbok
7. Ottershaw and Leatherhead
8. Chiang and Fletcher
9. Macondo and Riohacha
10. Cormoran Strike and Robin Ellacott
"Fat Chance" bet: ___%

Suitguy is not bitter.

feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

I guess classic literature is not the strong suit of this crowd. It isn't mine, either. The last book I bought was written by Bill Maher.

1. Laputa and Brobdingnag -- Gulliver's Travels

Laputa was the flying island and Brobdingnag was the land of the giants.

2. Ana Steele and Kate Kavanaugh -- Fifty Shades of Gray

We did the Game of Thrones question earlier in the series, so it was only fair that I ask a question about the other popular filthy book series.

3. Russell Square and Miss Pinkerton's Academy for Young Ladies -- Vanity Fair

4. Blackberry and Fiver -- Watership Down

5. Bologna and Pianosa -- Catch-22

6. Higgs and Chowbok -- Erewhon

7. Ottershaw and Leatherhead -- The War of the Worlds

8. Chiang and Fletcher -- Jonathan Livingston Seagull

9. Macondo and Riohacha -- One Hundred Years of Solitude

10. Cormoran Strike and Robin Ellacott -- The Cuckoo's Calling

In case you forgot, this is the crime fiction book that J.K. Rowling published last year under the name "Robert Galbraith".

5/26 + 5/27 + 5/28 + 5/29 Scores (8 participants)
Bob Juch - 18 + 36 + 12 + 40 = 106
franktangredi - 4 + 12 + 12 + 16 = 44
ShamelessWeasel - 4 + 14 + 8 + 16 = 42
smilergrogan - 6 + 10 + 8 + 16 = 40
themanintheseersuckersuit - 10 + 8 + 12 + 8 = 38
Bob78164 - 4 + 6 + 0 + 16 = 26
jarnon - 2 + 10 + 0 + 8 = 20
kroxquo - 2 + 10 + 0 + 8 = 20
