Googling oneself can pay off!

This afternoon, I came across this casting notice: http://www.mandy.com/1/cast3.cfm?v=59701392

What's interesting about this "adaptation from a play by Frank Tangredi" is that Frank Tangredi never heard about it, did not authorize it, and would not authorize it ... especially since somebody else is working to finance an authorized film of the same play.

I'm sure they came across the script in that ten-minute play anthology where it was published and thought, "Hey, this is a neat story, let's film it!" The idea of contacting the author doesn't seem to have occurred to them. But imagine them having the balls to even use my name in the ad!

Digging further in, I discovered that THEY ALREADY SHOT THE DAMN FILM LAST WEEK!

I've sent the director a strong email demanding that they cease production and promising that, if I do not receive an acknowledgment to that effect within 24 hours, I will consult an attorney. (And I will!)

So it was an interesting afternoon! And heck, at least he thought my play was worth stealing.

That's pretty brazen. Looks like they are based in Los Angeles. I happen to know (hell, I happen to be) a Los Angeles attorney qualified to handle this sort of matter. My work e-mail is my first initial (remember, my birth certificate doesn't say "Bob") and last name (at) raineslaw (dot) com. --Bob

I just learned that the Dramatists Guild will handle this for me even if I'm not a member.

I hope you get these pirates shut down. If you haven't already do so, I would also notify this mandy.com site to see if they can suspend these people's account or something similar.

I mentioned this a few months ago but it's worth repeating. Anyone on this board who has a business or otherwise thinks they may find themselves commented about online should set up daily google alerts for any common variations of their name or their business name. That way you get notified even if you don't actively go hunting for yourself. If someone posts a good or bad review about you anywhere, it's a good way to find out about it.

It always pays to Google yourself unless you have a common name.
