Director J.J. Abrams has announced the cast of the new Star Wars movie and there's some familiar faces and voices on board. Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, and Carrie Fisher will reprise their roles from the first Star Wars trilogy (Ford's Han Solo role is supposed to be substantial). Also back will be Anthony Daniels and Kenny Baker as R2D2 and C3P0 and Peter Mayhew as Chewbacca. John Williams, composer of the original score, including the famous theme, will also be back.

There's plenty of new faces as well, many of whom are not familiar names. The cast will include Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, and Domhnall Gleason. Two other new cast members are far more familiar: Max Von Sydow and Andy Serkis (who will presumably be creating a new computer character, hopefully not Jar Jar Binks). There's no word on roles to be played by the new cast members, although filming will begin next month for a Christmas 2015 release.

And in related news Disney and LucasFilm have decided that the novels that have been written as part of the "Expanded Universe" are no longer canonical, so there won't be any "Heir to the Empire" plotlines in the new trilogy. They've also disavowed the recent Cartoon Network series, although the next series will be "in canon".

I haven't read any of them, but there are a lot of books published as part of the Star Wars franchise. They're going to make a bunch of fans unhappy, saying none of that counts any more.

I don't know about that. All of the major comic book franchises (Superman, Batman, Spider-Man, etc.) reinvent themselves every few years and none of their fans seem to mind.

A lot of Trekkers minded when the two most recent Star Trek films upended the Star Trek universe. Blame that Abrams guy.

Are you kidding? There are lots of complaints every time one of the superhero franchises reboots.

I'm unhappy about the loss of some of the material from the Expanded Universe - Mara Jade and Luke's son, the death of Chewbacca, Han and Leia's twins and the story arcs that involved them. But I'm not so wedded to them that I'm wailing and gnashing my teeth.
