The Ultimate QoD Challenge -- Week 4, Monday

#1 Post by Pastor Fireball » Mon Apr 28, 2014 7:15 am

Sorry for the delay. I've had some Internet issues this morning. I suspect that will be the case for a lot of people, as some pretty severe weather has been moving through the South and the Midwest.

"Make the Connection"

OK, this is the final week of the first-level questions. Next week, we're doubling the difficulty and doubling the points.

1 point for each of these 10 connections.

Answers are due by Wednesday 4/30 at 4 PM EDT. (Note the extended deadline due to severe weather that may affect the host and at least one player.)

1. 2 A.M. / CLOSE THE DOOR / TURN OFF THE LIGHTS / HOLD ME
2. TIM ROBERTS / SKULL-PUNCHER / COMPROMISED COMPUTER / ROD ARGENT
3. PETRICHOR / SEREIN / GRAUPEL / VIRGA
4. ALFRED NUGENT / BERYL PATMORE / ELSIE HUGHES / CHARLES CARSON
5. KAONASHI / JUSTIN MCLEOD / AMISH DOLLS / RESTROOM ICONS
6. LUKE PERRY / RUSH LIMBAUGH / JAMES WOODS / ADAM WEST
7. PLAYBOY / VOICE OF AMERICA / DICTATORSHIP / JUNE 4
8. HENRY KISSINGER / CHARLIE ROSE / HUGH LAURIE / JEFF BRIDGES
9. SCHMETTERLING / FARFALLA / MARIPOSA / PAPILLON
10. CHRISTOPHER KIMBALL / DAGWOOD BUMSTEAD / CHARLES OSGOOD / PEE WEE HERMAN

Suitguy is not bitter.

feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

1. 2 A.M. / CLOSE THE DOOR / TURN OFF THE LIGHTS / HOLD ME

If you thought these were phrases leading up to sex, you were in the ballpark. These are all Teddy Pendergrass songs.

2. TIM ROBERTS / SKULL-PUNCHER / COMPROMISED COMPUTER / ROD ARGENT

Zombies. Wrestler Tim Roberts is known as "The Zombie", skull-puncher is another name for the zombie cocktail, a computer compromised by a hacker is called a zombie, and Rod Argent is the lead singer of the Zombies.

3. PETRICHOR / SEREIN / GRAUPEL / VIRGA

Types of precipitation.

4. ALFRED NUGENT / BERYL PATMORE / ELSIE HUGHES / CHARLES CARSON

The staff of Downton Abbey. They are the footman, cook, housekeeper, and butler.

5. KAONASHI / JUSTIN MCLEOD / AMISH DOLLS / RESTROOM ICONS

Human depictions without faces. Kaonashi was another name for No-Face in "Spirited Away" and Justin McLeod was Mel Gibson's character in "The Man Without a Face".

6. LUKE PERRY / RUSH LIMBAUGH / JAMES WOODS / ADAM WEST

I'm not touching that pricks answer with a 40-foot pole. These are actually people who have played themselves on "Family Guy".

7. PLAYBOY / VOICE OF AMERICA / DICTATORSHIP / JUNE 4

Site-wide stumper. I thought that maybe "June 4" would have steered somebody in the right direction. These are all phrases censored by Chinese Internet search engines.

8. HENRY KISSINGER / CHARLIE ROSE / HUGH LAURIE / JEFF BRIDGES

People who appeared in Stephen Colbert's video for Daft Punk's hit "Get Lucky".

9. SCHMETTERLING / FARFALLA / MARIPOSA / PAPILLON

Foreign words for "butterfly".

10. CHRISTOPHER KIMBALL / DAGWOOD BUMSTEAD / CHARLES OSGOOD / PEE WEE HERMAN

They all wear bowties. Christopher Kimball is the bowtied host of the long-running PBS series "America's Test Kitchen".

Bob J is leading the pack once again.

I just saw the zombies and Rod Argent is not the lead singer. That is Colin Blunstone. Rod plays keyboards and does backing vocals. He did sing for Argent.
