ANSWERS/POINTS LS OLD MUSICALS FRIDAY March 28

Well, here's what mrkelley has been waiting for, the only game he played in the original run!

Many of these were from Broadway shows, a couple I think were just movies. Rather than the singer, today it looks like I want the name of the movie. Lucky you! And don't go trying to figure out a remake or some other obscure movie that happened to have that song on its soundtrack. Like if it was Singing in the Rain, you wouldn't put down Legal Eagles because there was a scene where they were watching Singing in the Rain (well, you might but you wouldn't get credit, ha!), you would put down Singing in the Rain, dammit! Okay, bad example, because if you put down Hollywood Revue of 1929, I might have to give you credit just for knowing Ukelele Ike. But you know what I mean!

Most of these are fit for the topic, but it looks like I snuck one modern one in for the youngsters. I don't think it was part of the original game, but I have the years next to all the movies and I don't know why I would have done that just for my health, so let's put it to use. Are you still reading? Let's find out, shall we? One bonus point for the year of the movie (this is only the main part, not the bonus, which also has a movie theme today). Don't strain your ass, it's only a point and I'm going with what I have written down, so I'm not doing any research.

1. The wheels are yeller the upholstery's brown
The dashboard's genuine leather
With isinglass curtains you can roll right down
In case there's a change in the weather

2. I see cannibals munchin' a missionary luncheon
The years may have flown
But the memory stays
Like the hopes that were dashed
When the stock market crashed

3. Shall we then say goodnight and mean goodbye
Or perchance,
When the last little star has left the sky,
Shall we still be together
With are arms around each other
And shall you be my new romance

4. If you'd like to have a logical explanation
How I happened on this elegant syncopation
I will say without a moment of hesitation
There is just one place
That can light my face

5. How can I speak of her virtues
I don't know where to begin.
She's clever, she's smart, she reads music
She doesn't smoke or drink gin (like I do)
Yet when we're walking together
They sneer if I'm holding her hand

6. A robin feathering his nest
Has very little time to rest
While gathering his bits of twine and twig
Though quite intent in his pursuit
He has a merry tune to toot
He knows a song will move the job along

7. Middle class, don't speak of it
Savoir Faire, we reek of it
Some were born with rags and patches but
We use dollar bills for matches

8. Good looking, so refined.
Say wouldn't you like to know
What's going on in my mind?
So, let me get right to the point,
I don't pop my cork for every guy I see

9. When with the pedals
I love to meddle
When Paderewski comes this way
I'm so delighted
If I'm invited
To hear the long-haired genius play

10. So excuse me forgetting but these things I do
You see I've forgotten if they're green or they're blue
Anyway the thing is what I really mean
Yours are the sweetest eyes I've ever seen

Bonus Instrumental: This orchestra’s rendition of this theme song was #1 for nine weeks in 1959, probably one of the most popular movie theme instrumentals ever. The movie concerns such quaint 1950’s topics as teen sex, their respective parents’ adultery and the grandeur that is the beach vacation.

Bonus Bonus: The movie above was the debut role for this actor, who was typecast as a blond beach boy and the source for an aging actor caricature that is a recurring character on The Simpsons.

Super Bonus: The movie in #7 above was directed by a person who was much better known for his musical roles than for his directing credits.

I love musicals - one of elwing's and my first dates was to see a college performance of "Guys and Dolls" at her school.

If there's two things I know, it's Bible verses and Broadway Show Tunes.
Spoiler

The dashboard's genuine leather
With isinglass curtains you can roll right down
In case there's a change in the weather

Shall we still be together

I don't know where to begin.
She's clever, she's smart, she reads music
She doesn't smoke or drink gin (like I do)
Yet when we're walking together
They sneer if I'm holding her hand

Moulin Rouge

2. I see cannibals munchin' a missionary luncheon

THOSE WERE THE GOOD OLD DAYS - DAMN YANKEES (55)

My cat Lola wasn't named for the Kinks' song, she was named for the Lola song in Damn Yankees. I loved this movie when I was a kid, loved Ray Walston, and this was my favourite song.

3. Shall we then say goodnight and mean goodbye
Or perchance,
When the last little star has left the sky,
Shall we still be together
With are arms around each other
And shall you be my new romance

SHALL WE DANCE? - THE KING AND I (56)

No man has looked so good bald, before or since, than Yul Brynner. My sister and I taught ourselves to polka by dancing around the basement to this song.

How I happened on this elegant syncopation
I will say without a moment of hesitation
There is just one place
That can light my face

GARY, INDIANA - THE MUSIC MAN (62)

Probably one of my least favourite songs from one of my most favourite musicals, so I'm not sure why I used this one.

5. How can I speak of her virtues
I don't know where to begin.
She's clever, she's smart, she reads music

Say wouldn't you like to know

So, let me get right to the point,

So, can you tell yet that I really like Bob Fosse? Ha!

9. When with the pedals
I love to meddle
When Paderewski comes this way
I'm so delighted
If I'm invited
To hear the long-haired genius play

I LOVE A PIANO - EASTER PARADE (48 )

10. So excuse me forgetting but these things I do
You see I've forgotten if they're green or they're blue
Anyway the thing is what I really mean
Yours are the sweetest eyes I've ever seen

YOUR SONG - MOULIN ROUGE (01)

Nice to see you've mellowed on this one over the years, Caro.

POINTS

Well, I can see why mrkelley broke down and answered an LS that month. He gets the only perfect score of the day, plus 3 extra year points. Mel could have cleaned up as well, but unfortunately neglected to put down both song and movie. Both KT and Ghost got a year point on ones they didn't even know, so props to them on the guessing. Props as well to Marley, who got his high score of the month on this one! And lb gets 10 I can give them because it's my game points on the combined strength of invoking the JJC, Eat the Rich and calling himself a dumbass. We all shine on.

Not complaining because it really doesn't matter, but the directions for this question never say to identify the song title. Maybe that's just assumed, but for those of us who never even open the LS threads, much less play, it might have been nice to spell it out.
