A week ago in Newnan, GA. He was the father of my friend, Linda, in Boise. She's been so upset she was just able to tell me tonight.

It must have been unexpected? I'm very sorry....especially if she is just now able to tell her friends.

No, he had diabetes and was having problems for years. He had a leg amputated about ten years ago. I don't know the actual cause of death as Linda could barely talk. I'm her only friend.

You're her only friend? I hope you're checking on her every now and then.
It looks like they lived quite a distance apart. I do know from personal experience when my dad died, that my sister who lives in Phoenix seemed to take his illness and death a lot harder than those of us who lived closer to him.

My other siblings and I felt like it was due to her not being able to see him but once a twice a year for the past 30 years. We could be completely off base with our assessment, who knows?

I hope your friend will get some professional help if she is having trouble coping.

Linda already suffered from severe depression. No drug they've tried helps.

The worst part was the she and her kids tried to fly to Atlanta for the funeral but were stuck in Salt Lake City for a day before they gave up and went back home. All the flights were full due to Spring Break. Of course she didn't call me. I could have bought her tickets instead of relying on Delta's Buddy Passes. (Her father worked for Delta before he had to retire.)

Mental illness makes friendships way harder than they already are.

Your friend has my sympathy. You have my admiration.

Maybe it was his heart? My dad was diabetic and his heart gave out.

I am sorry for your loss.

It's really terrible she missed the funeral. I used to fly on buddy passes when my daughter worked for Delta. They use a priority system, but I would think trying to get to a family funeral would be pretty high up on the list. The airlines have cut back on the number of flights recently, so I imagine it is harder to get on when you're waiting on space available.

Keep up with her as she really needs a friend at a time like this. I know you will.
